WHEN it comes to knickers, M&S certainly know what they’re doing.

Last year they sold a staggering 60 million pairs of trousers, with official figures from M&S revealing that one in two Brits bought underwear there.

For over 95 years, good old Marks & Sparks have been keeping up to date, responding to trends and keeping up with the times.

Nothing proved this better than when they launched their range of leak-proof ‘period pants’ in 2020.

They are now the market leader in this category, with 6,000 packs sold every week for the last year.

But not resting on its laurels, the brand is now expanding into new territory and, from tomorrow, will offer a range of underwear designed specifically for customers with stoma bags.

Working in partnership with the charity Colostomy UK, they have created trousers that are stylish and comfortable whilst accommodating single or multiple stoma bags.

Why would you need a stoma bag?

COLOSTOMY is an operation on the colon – a part of the intestine.

It diverts one end of the colon through an opening in the belly known as a stoma.

This means that the person can no longer have a bowel movement.

Instead, the poop is collected in a stoma bag, which is placed over the opening.

Many people have to undergo a colostomy due to illness.

This may include:

  • bowel cancer and other forms of cancer
  • ulcerative colitis
  • Crohn’s disease
  • diverticulitis

A stoma may also be necessary due to genetic diseases, congenital anomalies, after abdominal trauma and after radiotherapy.

With more than 200,000 women living with stoma in the UK, they clearly identified a gap in the market – and responded.

Soozie Jenkinson, Head of Lingerie Design at M&S says: “We have worked closely with Colostomy UK and women living with stoma and, by listening and responding to their needs, we have developed a range of knickers designed to provide comfort, support and confidence. all day.”

A quick Google search for ‘stoma panties’ will turn up uninspiring colors and £20 plus price tags for a single pair of trousers from medical suppliers.

In comparison, M&S packs cost just £18 for three pairs of underwear.

And it’s not about having to wear big Bridget Jones-style trousers just because you have a stoma – the design is in line with the classic M&S underwear shape, which accounts for a third of all knicker sales.

Shoppers rush to buy a ‘flattering’ new M&S dress that’s ‘perfect for holidays’, ‘wrinkle-free’ and ‘ideal for traveling’

And they are also available with Brazilian panties.

In terms of color options, they come in black packaging and various shades of pink and nude.

They are also expertly designed. Inside, the underwear has elastic at the pocket opening, which keeps the stoma bag in place day and night.

Libby Herbert, CEO of Colostomy UK, said the fact that M&S has met demand for this much-needed underwear is hugely significant.

“Affordable underwear options for those living with ostomies will allow them to shop with confidence and ease for the first time on the British High Street,” she says.

Also available in the range of stoma-friendly knickers will be High Leg and Brazilian styles with lace designs for £20 for a pack of three.

And they’ve also created underwear to match their best-selling bra styles.

Well done, M&S – there’s nothing interesting about this line, that’s for sure.

Why everyone is loving M&S

Deputy fashion editor Abby McHale revealed to Fabulous why M&S is the store of the moment. She explained:

“M&S has really pulled out all the stops this season, there are so many great products to get excited about.

“A brand that was once known for its ‘slouchy fashion’, that notion is long gone and is now one of the leading women’s high street fashion stores.

“Their handbag line in particular is super strong, with sales up 170% over plan, with many more naïve designers at just a fraction of the price.

“The brand is now also number 1 in style perception, compared to third place last year, this comes from a very strong design team focused on modernizing the brand, not just taking into account the appearance of parts, but as easy to use as well.

“Price is also an important factor as you can get many good quality pieces for under £30.

“After giving you a sneak peek at the upcoming collection, there are plenty of other amazing pieces releasing in the coming months for you to keep an eye on.

“Think leopard print dresses, colorful slips, embroidered boho jackets, plus lots of amazing swimwear and accessories, as well as great wardrobe staples that will last year after year.”
