It can be difficult to choose an outfit to wear to a wedding as a guest, especially because you don’t want to mess up and choose the wrong thing.

Luckily, etiquette expert Myka Meier shared two top tips for not making a fashion mistake this summer.

Mikafounder of Beaumont Labelloaded one video saying, “Don’t make these two mistakes at a summer wedding.”

The first tip she gave was to avoid a pale pink color as a guest.

The New York-based expert explained: “Okay, first, let’s take a look at this.

“Do you think light pink is a safe color choice? Er, it’s actually the color of the season for brides.

“So imagine showing up to an event, it’s the bride, she’s wearing the same or similar dress to yours, you don’t want that to happen.”

You might have a gorgeous floral dress that you’re dying to wear for a special occasion, but Myka advised that you stay away from that too.

The etiquette professional continued: “Number two, look at this, you might think it’s safe. Florals, right, summer?

“In fact, it’s the worst thing you want to do because, again, it’s trendy for brides to wear this year.

“So avoid florals when it comes to a white background, avoid light pink or anything sheer and you’ll be in good shape.”

It goes without saying that when choosing a color to wear as a wedding guest, you should avoid white at all costs.

Wedding guest dress drama

Bridal stylist Anny Choi said Vogue: “The simple answer is ‘no,’ unless the invitation requires it.”

She highlighted that some couples may choose to have an all-white party on the day or in the events leading up to it.

Anny said if this is the case, you should choose plain white looks rather than white floral prints, as many brides opt for that.

However, for a typical wedding you should never choose white, including variations such as cream, ivory and beige.

Another outfit to avoid is florals as a wedding guest, according to Myka

It can be a gray area when the dress has a printed design that includes some white.

Anny said, “As long as the main color isn’t white, you’re in the clear.”

She advised you to also check how your look looks photographed, as some shades of blush can appear white, for example.

Stylist Micaela Erlanger added: “Unless it’s a wild disco party, avoid colors that really stand out.

“Avoid neons, avoid red, avoid anything that’s too loud. Unless, of course, your friend is getting married at a rave. And don’t get me wrong, I’m sure this has happened before!”

As many people say about wedding attire, if you have to ask, the answer is probably no.

Clothing Etiquette for Wedding Guests

If you’re struggling to decide on a dress for wedding season, here are some rules on what not to wear so you don’t get into trouble.

  • Folklore says that wearing red to a wedding means you slept with the groom.
  • Casual attire like jeans and flip-flops should always be avoided.
  • Any color that can be chosen like white or cream – even if it isn’t.
  • Most would agree that your cleavage needs to be covered.
  • Wearing white is a big no-no if you’re not the bride.
