The high street has always been my first choice for updating my wardrobe, but it seems this season there’s a lot of competition from supermarkets.

The days of drab supermarket clothing aisles are long gone – now it’s definitely worth a browse before checking out your weekly food shop.

Companies like F&F at Tesco, Tu Clothing at Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer have upped their game when it comes to offering fashionable pieces at reasonable prices.

Earlier this year, shoppers went crazy on TikTok for a coordinating set from F&F that closely resembled a sold-out H&M piece. And last week, TikTokers generated excitement over George’s £20 leopard print gilet at Asda, which was identical to the £80 Damson Madder version.

In 2013, Morrisons launched its clothing line, Nutmeg, and has since been killing it when it comes to fantastic quality and affordable fashion.

So if you’re planning to pop down to your local store this weekend, we’ve picked out the top new arrivals from each of the supermarket fashion brands that are worth adding to your basket.

It’s never too early to start prepping for your winter wardrobe, and this beige suede coat is a stylish alternative to the traditional biker, plus it’s perfect for layering sweaters and dresses.

At £50 it’s a great price and you’ll likely find similar styles in high street stores like Zara and Mango for at least double within a few weeks.

This faux leather cross-body bag is a real bargain at £15 and is reminiscent of the popular Celine teen classic bag costing £2,500.

You can wear it as a crossbody for everyday use or attach it to the strap to transform it into a clutch for special occasions.

Mary-Janes are no longer considered a “grandma shoe” — instead, they’ve become a chic, trendy choice, and this pair of silver crocs is cheaper than a bunch of flowers.

The metallic finish gives a modern touch, making them perfect for composing any look or adding style to a more casual look.

Leopard print is back as a trend this year and is transitioning into fall fashion.

A blouse with a tied collar and puffed sleeves is the perfect way to elevate the print and add a sophisticated touch to any look.

The asymmetrical cut of this dress gives it a luxurious look, but there’s no need to save it for festive parties.

While it’s a fantastic choice for Christmas Day, its timeless style makes it perfect to wear all fall long.

Striped pajama pants became a social media sensation earlier this year with the rise of #scandistyle.

These striped pants with an elastic waist are super stylish, so now you can wear your comforts outside the house without shame!

A denim dress can look effortlessly elegant and sophisticated, but it’s so easy to throw on in the morning.

This long-line option from M&S’s core collection is a true wardrobe staple, available in petite and tall sizes.

These new slingbacks have been generating a lot of buzz since their release last week, but hurry: they’re selling out fast.

With silver buckles, they look a lot like a Ganni pair that retails for £325, making them a must-have for any fashionista.

This tailored waistcoat with hidden closure from M&S’s premium Autograph collection surprised me with its affordable price of just £59.

This luxurious piece is a perfect addition to any work wardrobe.

Pair it with a long white A-line skirt in September, then transition to matching pants when fall arrives to rev up your morning routine.

Nutmeg in Morrisons

A super soft cardigan is perfect for layering, and this is a chic way to embrace the red trend – throw it over your shoulders on chilly nights or rock the sparkle for the festive season.

The diamond studs give it a more premium look and are similar to previous styles from Zara and Mango where it would probably cost at least three times the price at £16.

Cord is a great material to invest in because its thickness ensures durability and warmth.

This dress features a timeless silhouette that can be styled for both day and night – and with brown set to be a big trend next season, now is the perfect time to shop this dress.

If blue and white stripes are a lot like the pants you actually wear to bed, then this pinstripe pair from Nutmeg might be a better fit for you.

Their neutral color means they match almost everything in your wardrobe and the striped detail suits more elegant environments.

George at Asda

These metallic silver ankle boots are a standout addition to any wardrobe – the pointed toe brings a touch of sophistication to any look, while the kitten heel offers comfort for all-day wear.

Although silver shoes may seem scary at first, they are super versatile and great for a day to night look.

A great tip is to buy your winter coat in advance, as the best ones tend to sell out quickly!

This checked camel number looks mega expensive — the belt detail, gorgeous tonal plaid, and oversized collar are big things for me.

George’s Studio Edit features some amazing quality premium pieces, like this lime green dress, which would be ideal if you have a special occasion to attend.

The gathered waist and frayed details suit all body shapes, while the lime green hue will add a pop of color to your wardrobe.

Is supermarket fashion the new high street?

Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale weighs in:

Supermarkets have really upped their game when it comes to their fashion lines. These days, when you go to do your weekly food shopping, you can also choose from a selection of stylish, purse-friendly pieces for the whole family.

Tesco has just announced a 0.7 per cent rise for the quarter thanks to “strong growth in clothing” and M&S has claimed the title of number one womenswear destination on the high street.

Asda’s clothing line George made £1.5m for the supermarket in 2023, 80 per cent of Sainsbury’s clothes were sold at full price rather than discounted, and sales of Nutmeg at Morrisons also rose by 2 percent last year.

So what is it about supermarket fashion that is so successful?

Not only are the clothes really affordable, they’re also good quality – many of them being part of programs like the Better Cotton Initiative.

They often stick to classic pieces that they know will last the customer year after year.

Plus, because they buy so much inventory, they can deliver parts quickly and buy cheaper because of volumes.
