MOVE over the hot pants. . . This summer’s biggest fashion trend will be a teeny pair of brightly colored nylon panties with, ahem, nothing worn over them.
Celebrities have been giving up pants for some time now.
But now, thanks to fashion brand Miu Miu, the micropants – which are meant to be worn as outerwear – are heading to a Wetherspoons or Vodka Revs near you.
Fashion technology company Lyst, which produces a quarterly index of the most searched for items on the internet, has reported that a pair of tiny £600 trousers is the third most searched for clothing item in the world right now.
And historically, where Miu Miu begins, High Street follows.
The “swim briefs” remind us of the parakeet smugglers of the 80s.
But, despite their name and appearance, they are not intended for the pool.
The brand, Prada’s contemporary “little sister”, debuted nylon pants on its spring/summer catwalk, combined with ruffled blouses, trench coats and sandals.
The Speedo-style pants are the latest iteration of Miu Miu’s move toward pantsless style.
In March 2023, she dressed The Crown actress Princess Diana, Emma Corrin, in sparkly underwear on the runway.
Embroidered with sequins, beads and 75% glass, the nappy-shaped pants cost £3,750 – and are still available if you want a pair.
Social media was set on fire and influencers couldn’t wait to buy a pair of expensive pants.
Of course, there were also critics. “The most expensive yeast infection you can get,” wrote one commenter.
“I don’t know what’s sadder – the fact that Miu Miu is actually selling this shit or that there are actually people out there who buy this,” said another.
Even though most of us thought Emma looked crazy and wondered how uncomfortable crotch-compromising pants must be, the trend has taken hold.
Mango was the first High Street brand to launch its own version, for a hefty £89.99.
And Nasty Gal and Free People followed suit.
Designers like Dolce & Gabbana also started using pants as outerwear.
Billie Piper, not known for her bold fashion choices, even wore striped pants from D&G to the premiere of Netflix’s Scoop.
And Alexa Chung – usually seen in a miniskirt and flats – wore silk pants designed by none other than Victoria Beckham.
From Sydney Sweeney to Jodie Turner-Smith, Kristen Stewart and Dua Lipa, everyone in showbiz seems to have had a brief encounter with their teeny-tiny pants.
Miu Miu’s £600 micro pants in red, pea green and mustard yellow are their most popular so far.
But can normal people pull off this look?
For a night out, channel Sydney Sweeney—the bombshell stunned in a pair of embellished silver Miu Miu pants, paired with a blazer and opaque tights earlier this year.
However, I wouldn’t recommend digging up your guy’s Y-front from the laundry basket and wearing it superhero-style over black tights like Kylie Jenner did.
Or pair them with Uggs, like Bella Hadid.
The fact is, this trend isn’t going anywhere.
Mark my words, you will see this in your city this summer.
(Let’s hope the budgie smugglers don’t come back with the guys.)
