As cash-strapped Brits look to cut costs wherever possible, Gemma revealed how you can look expensive without a big price tag.

The fashionista who has just released a book with her beauty journalist friend Samantha Silver This is beauty. This is fashion. This is life: The expert guide for people short on timeshared her top three tips for “looking and feeling great” — all while saving money.

“Our Instagram feeds can make you feel like you need to spend a fortune to look good, but if you choose your pieces wisely you can create an outfit that looks a lot more expensive than it is,” said Gemma.

Never spend on designer jeans

Jeans are a wardrobe classic that never goes out of style – but according to the guru, those who have style celebrities like Britney Spears, Rihanna and Fearne Cotton, there’s no need to buy fancy brands.

Gemma noted: “Our Great British High Street does jeans so well.

”We have the widest range of shades and sizes, and you can easily get a bright pair that will wear well and wash well for under £100.

”I recommend checking out Abercrombie jeans.”

Speaking about the retailer, the fashion professional said the popular brand offers seven different styles and shapes, in UK sizes 6 to 20 and five leg lengths, from extra short to extra long.

”The main style I recommend trying is high-waisted relaxed jeans.

”Just dress them up with a basic t-shirt, some sunglasses and a pair of chunky dad sandals.”

She advised: ”Add a tailored blazer as the structure of the jacket will help create a balanced silhouette with the looser lower half.”

Rival River Island also ”always has a great selection of modern jeans that follow current trends”.

The high street retailer offers a huge range of sizes for UK 6 – UK 18 and three leg lengths – and prices start at an affordable £25.

”This flare style keeps your proportions balanced, and choosing a deeper shade of blue makes the jeans look more expensive than they really are.

There are no rules for jewelry

Adding a few pieces of jewelry, whether it’s a statement necklace or dainty earrings, is an easy yet effective way to elevate any outfit in seconds.

But as the pro explains, this is not something you need to spend hundreds on.

”Buy something at a car boot sale or charity shop, browse Vinted and eBay, buy something in the clothing section of your local supermarket when shopping, or check out high street clothing stores.

”You can mix metals (gold and silver) or combine delicate jewelry with chunky pieces – whatever feels good!”

Among her favorites is also the Swedish fashion giant H&M, a must-have if you are looking for “extravagant jewelry that can make an impact on a look”.

Bonus tip: ”To ensure your jewelry lasts the test of time, you should not shower while wearing it and be sure to spray your perfume before adding the jewelry.”

Gemma’s three tips for looking chic on a budget

  1. Never spend on designer jeans: River Island ”always has a great selection of modern jeans that follow current trends”. The high street retailer offers a huge range of sizes for UK 6 – UK 18 and three leg lengths – and prices start at an affordable £25.
  2. There are no rules for jewelry: ”Buy something at a car boot sale or charity shop, browse Vinted and eBay, buy something in the clothing section of your local supermarket when grocery shopping, or check out high street clothing stores.”
  3. Don’t forget your favorite sites: With a growing number of second-hand sites like Vinted and Depop, there’s no excuse not to buy – or sell – used clothes. Gemma, for example, managed to get her hands on chic Chanel sunglasses for just £17.

Don’t forget pre-loved sites

With a growing number of second-hand sites like Vinted and Depop, there’s no excuse not to buy – or sell – used clothes.

The best part? Not only can you save a lot of money – and help tackle the climate crisis – but even find designer gear for a fraction of the price.

”I managed to find some gems there, including some Chanel sunglasses for £17 (I searched Channel and the seller spelled it wrong so no bids) and some baggy leopard print jeans for £4.”

The thrifty fashionista advised: ”Set up alerts for the pieces you’re looking for, ask the seller all your questions to make sure the pieces are authentic, and ask to see more photos to make sure you see them from all angles and can check for imperfections.”
