But an experienced mom called Linzi Taylor has shared how you don’t need to spend a small fortune when transitioning your child from their winter school wardrobe to their summer one.
That’s because she noticed how Asda is selling green check summer dresses that cost just £1 at the tills.
Next to a photo of her cheap purchase, which she shared with a money-saving Facebook group B&M bargains, extreme money-saving deals and moreshe wrote: “Not B&M but Asda, these school sundresses were being scanned for £1!
“I went back and bought some for next year too!”
Deciding not to keep the gate, Linzi then revealed the exact branch she spotted the deal in – Huddersfield.

Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long for the post to catch the attention of parents across the country, with many eager to get their hands on the uniform as he hunted for a bargain.
“No way! That’s a bargain!” wrote one.
“I don’t have the chance to go up from Brig this way, but I might have to at this price.”
Linzi replied: “Definitely worth a try!”
Another tagged a friend and begged: “Let me know if your Asda has any green please.”
Meanwhile, another was intrigued to find out whether the uniform was on sale or just in the ‘new arrivals’ section.
“They were just in the uniform section,” Linzi replied helpfully.

Mum-of-two Maddy Alexander Grout, 38, has revealed her top tips for saving big on school uniforms.
Hit the sales
Maddy says, “Keep your eyes open and plan ahead.
“Target sales of next year’s winter coats, sneakers and sports kits in the next size.
“The worst time to buy school uniforms is right before classes start, as that is when prices are most inflated.”
Second-hand savings
If you haven’t been that organized (and let’s face it, many of us aren’t!), you can still score cheap items any time of year if you shop secondhand.
Maddy says: “Use Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Vinted and Freecycle throughout the year to buy used uniforms and coats.
“Also, check if your school has a used uniform store.
“If you need items with the school logo, they will be there.
“Check out local Facebook groups and ask if anyone is selling school uniforms in the size you need.
“See if your school has a Facebook page or group, you might find some real bargains from people selling or donating old uniforms.
“My school does a second hand sale whenever they hold events to raise money for the school PTA, if your school doesn’t do this then maybe suggest it, as people can donate old things they have.
“You can free up space and raise money for the school at the same time.”
Be experienced in sales
Be sure to track in-store sales as well.
Maddy says: “Marks & Spencer tend to have a 20% off school uniform sale in the summer, so you can get cheaper uniforms for September.
“Also for off-brand items, check out sites like Build A Bundle and marketplaces like Little Pickles.
“Buy summer uniforms in August and September of the following year, when there is always a discount, along with jackets for the summer.
“Sainsbury’s TU has 25% off weeks throughout the year, so you can buy items like polo tops, skirts and trousers cheaper and stock up for next year.”
Discounts and promotions
There are other ways to save too.
Maddy says: “Does your work have a discount scheme as an employee benefit?
“You can often buy vouchers in large supermarkets where you can save on purchasing the voucher.
“Also, exchange with friends, set up a WhatsApp group and see if you can make any exchanges.
“I donated a lot of my son’s old uniforms to friends with younger children who can use them.
“Read emails from schools, schools often have partnerships with places that sell uniforms.
“They will email you discount codes throughout the year.”
