EQUIPPED with leggings and a vest top, ballet shoes were at the height of fashion in the 90s.

But now, those who experienced the trend at the time are left groaning, after flat shoes returned to Primark shelves.

It was in the 1940s that the ballet slipper finally left the stage and entered everyday life.

Pumps were stocked on every high street, including in designer stores, as the footwear style began to gain traction in the fashion world.

Not only were they worn by Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana, but they were also seen on Kate Moss, Alexa Chung and Bella Hadid.

The understatedly chic and effortlessly polished style became a cult-favorite accessory, but years later, the “balletcore” trend began to lose popularity, as chunky, boots came to dominate.

While we recently saw Primark shoppers groan at the return of disc straps, now the long-lost members of the footwear family have been spotted back on the high street, leaving shoppers divided.

Post on the official Primark Instagram account, with the username @primacythe beloved chain gave shoppers an up-close look at its lineup of new sneakers.

Next to the short clip, the caption read: “Take our flats for a spin… you won’t be disappointed. Prices from £10.”

There are a variety of ballet shoes available, with double strap and single strap options on the shelves.

There are also plenty of colors to choose from – with the shoes available in red, white, beige, blue and black.

But the social media post, which quickly racked up 7,668 likes and 164 comments, caused a major divide online.

While some were excited to see the sneakers back in stores, others weren’t as impressed.

One person said: “The millennial in me just can’t accept this…not again.”

Another agreed: “Not again.”

A third commented: “That’s a no from me.”

All the 90s trends that are back

It may be 2024, but fashion fans are looking to the past when it comes to new styles. So what ’90s trends are making a comeback these days?

Claw Clips

These hair accessories were a huge trend in the ’90s, but now they’re more popular among those experimenting with the “clean girl” aesthetic. Designers like Prada have released their own versions, although there are thousands of colors and styles to choose from on the high street.

Platform slippers

Again a popular choice among fashionistas in the ’90s, these heels have made a comeback with designers like Balenciaga trying their luck with their own styles.

Cargo pants

Once worn by All Saints stars, cargo pants became a popular trend among teenagers in the ’90s. But now they’ve gotten a fashion makeover, with stars like Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber putting their own spin on the trend.

Jeans and a beautiful top

It was the phrase that defined fashion for a decade, and now famous faces like Sofia Richie are sporting the reinvented trend – pairing their own denim with a more sophisticated top. But are you willing to take your cute jeans and tops out of your wardrobe for a second time?

While someone else stated: “It looks cheap and nasty.”

However, at the same time, many fashion fans were desperate to get cheap shoes and many were eager to express this.

They look adorable. I’ll look for that tomorrow

One fashionista shared: “I’m going to need a pair of each.”

A second wrote: “My favorite shoes ever made so far.”

The history of Primark

PRIMARK first opened in 1969 as Pennies in Dublin, hoping to offer affordable fashion in Ireland.

A Primark store officially opened as Primark in 1974 in Derby.

The retailer now has 193 stores in the UK and 441 stores worldwide, with a target of operating 530 stores by the end of 2026.

One shopper smiled: “They look beautiful. I’ll look for that tomorrow!

While another explained: “I bought two pairs of satin ones, one pink and a blue one, so comfortable! Love them!”

Meanwhile, one fashion fan revealed: “Without a doubt the most comfortable ballerinas I’ve ever owned (I have black and beige).”
