WHEN it comes to sunglasses, the struggle can be real when trying to find a style that looks good on you.
These days, you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your couch to try on glasses, as many brands offer virtual try-ons.
However, if you don’t mind that or sit in the store trying on countless pairs, then listen up.
Universally square sunglasses have a shape that suits everyone.
They are one of the most versatile shapes and you can get them in various sizes, from large versions to smaller square versions, depending on your preference and how they look on your face.
Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale breaks down the different types of sunglasses based on your face shape.
oval
If you have an oval face shape, you can wear just about any style of sunglasses – you lucky guy!
This is because you have a mix of soft and angular lines.
So you can be more adventurous – then big shades are perfect.
Square
Square faces have a defined chin, which means their face is quite angular.
Therefore, the advice often given is to opt for sunglasses that can soften your face – such as pairs with curved or rounded edges.
Therefore, when it comes to square glasses, look for pairs that are not so angular and that, although they maintain the square shape, are slightly rounded at the edges.
Round
Full cheekbones and a rounded chin make for a round face.
It’s recommended that you contrast your face shape when it comes to sunglasses, so in this case you want to elongate your soft, curved features.
Square glasses are perfect for this – however, don’t go overboard as they can go over your entire face.
Instead, opt for smaller square frames that border rectangles.
Heart
Heart-shaped faces are wider at the forehead and narrower at the chin.
With smooth, straight lines, hearts can wear any style they want.
Wayfarer sunglasses can be especially flattering as they are horizontal on top and rounded on the bottom, giving a square feel without being too angular.
Pear
A pear-shaped face is said to be the reverse of a heart-shaped face, where the chin is longer than the forehead.
Square sunglasses are great for highlighting pear-shaped features and balancing the proportions of your face.
Look for sunglasses that fall in the middle of the large versus small spectrum.
They cover enough to sit just below the eyebrow and end just above the midpoint of the nose.
How to look chic on a budget

Fashion stylist Gemma Rose Breger and beauty journalist Samantha Silver have revealed how you can elevate your looks without spending hundreds of pounds.
- Never spend on designer jeans: River Island ”always has a great selection of modern jeans that follow current trends”. The high street retailer offers a huge range of sizes for UK 6 – UK 18 and three leg lengths – and prices start at an affordable £25.
- There are no rules for jewelry: ”Buy something at a car boot sale or charity shop, browse Vinted and eBay, buy something in the clothing section of your local supermarket when shopping, or check out high street clothing stores.”
- Don’t forget your favorite sites: With a growing number of second-hand sites like Vinted and Depop, there’s no excuse not to buy – or sell – used clothes. Gemma, for example, managed to get her hands on chic Chanel sunglasses for just £17.
