In fact, it exists to protect your body.

It turns out that the secret compartment is actually for hygiene purposes and the proper word for it is “reinforcement”.

but what does it do?

Many underwear are made from synthetic material and lace, which can irritate the skin, especially in the most delicate areas.

Therefore, the gusset, which is usually made from breathable, moisture-wicking fabric such as cotton, helps keep the genitals dry and ventilated.

Cotton is highly absorbent and prevents friction, as well as reducing the risk of infection.

The synthetic materials you often find in satin or lace panties don’t offer protection against friction, sweat and bacteria, so the cotton insert is vital.

And the news that they provide vital protection has left people perplexed.

One person on X, formerly Twitter, said: “I’ve been wondering the same thing for years!

“And I use them every day!”

Another added: “Cool! Learn something new every day.”

“Ipod holder, I get it,” joked a third.

Meanwhile, a fourth said: “I discovered the little pocket in your underwear is called a gusset and I’m really bothered by that word.”

And they’re not the only ones to be impressed by the feature, Stacey Solomon was left baffled by the “secret pockets” she discovered in all of her underwear.

Taking to her Instagram Story, the mother of three posted a video of her swimsuit, pointing out the small notch in the pant lining.

Speaking in the video, she asked: “I’ve been saving my laundry and I just need to know that.

“I’m going to wear my swimsuit because no one wants to see the inside of my panties, but on the inside of my panties there’s a secret pocket right in the middle.

“Like a secret midday compartment. What is it for? Am I missing something? Should I put something there?

“I just need to know what it’s for, why it’s in each pair? What does that mean?”

In her final clip, Stacey can be seen playfully slipping mini Daim enters the “midday pocket”.

She joked: “It doesn’t matter what this secret pocket is for, I know exactly what’s going on in mine. I have a supply of the noon Daim bar.
