A footballer’s fiancée has divided opinion after bringing back a 90s fashion trend to her summer holiday wardrobe.

Jilly Cross, from Glasgow, is engaged to former Rangers and current Motherwell star Andy Halliday.

She regularly shares her clothing and shopping choices with her army of social media followers (@jillyisabella).

In a recent clip, she paired a crochet minidress with a pastel yellow shirt and crochet hat for a meal in Mallorca, Spain.

In the caption of her post, she said: “I said beanie, but make it summer.”

She also styled a bright red with a matching top and champagne satin midi skirt for another night out.

Regardless of the weather, the crochet beanie often completed the look of denim shorts, low-rise jeans, or microskirts alongside a form-fitting top and leather jacket in the ’90s.

It adorned the heads of some of the biggest icons of the time, including Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan.

Even Justin Timberlake was a fan of the trend, sporting a neutral shade at an awards gala in 2002.

And if fashion influencer Jilly is any indication, the crochet beanie could be back in summer 2024.

But people were seriously divided over the possible return of the ’90s accessory, with Jilly’s holiday outfit clip racking up almost 100,000 views

“I love you girl but that hat is a mess,” one person said.

A second joked: “My grandmother used to put one of them in the teapot, I’m sure!”

“Sorry, Jilly, but did your hat come full of tangerines?” asked a third.

A fourth echoed: “I love your clothes, but the hat looks like the netting a pear comes from from whole foods.”

A fifth said: “The outfit is fab but I’m strongly questioning the hat choice. I love you, Jilly, but it’s a no from me.”

Meanwhile, a sixth begged: “Oooh no, please take it off.”

But Jilly, who has her own fashion brand Dulaaccepted the hate while joking: “Have Troops ever hit you with a knitted hat??? We are all very hurt by this fashion choice.

“It’s okay, I think you might like this.”

And it seems that some fashion fans are already completely on board with the beanie’s return.

One said: “I’m obsessed with the hat. As a hat, I need this for the summer.”

A second chimed in: “I need that hat immediately.”

A third wrote: “OMG this outfit gives me Lindsay Lohan in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen!

“I loved the hat, stunning,” said a fourth.

A fifth added: “Jilly I feel like we had a similar conversation about crocodiles many years ago but somehow you’re going to get every girl to wear one of these and I’m not ready for that.”

“You look good in anything. I love how you set trends and don’t follow them,” said another person.

All the 90s trends that are back

It may be 2024, but fashion fans are looking to the past when it comes to new styles. So what ’90s trends are making a comeback these days?

Claw Clips

These hair accessories were a huge trend in the ’90s, but now they’re more popular among those experimenting with the “clean girl” aesthetic. Designers like Prada have released their own versions, although there are thousands of colors and styles to choose from on the high street.

Platform slippers

Again a popular choice among fashionistas in the ’90s, these heels have made a comeback with designers like Balenciaga trying their luck with their own styles.

Cargo pants

Once worn by All Saints stars, cargo pants became a popular trend among teenagers in the ’90s. But now they’ve gotten a fashion makeover, with stars like Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber putting their own spin on the trend.

Jeans and a beautiful top

It was the phrase that defined fashion for a decade, and now famous faces like Sofia Richie are sporting the reinvented trend – pairing their own denim with a more sophisticated top. But are you willing to take your cute jeans and tops out of your wardrobe for a second time?
