SUMMER has finally arrived with temperatures rising this weekend, but it’s been so long since we dressed for warmer weather that many of us have forgotten what to wear.

The Sun fashion team is here to help with this guide to the hottest heatwave outfits.

Clemmie Fieldsend and Abby McHale reveal these dos and don’ts so you never suffer from unsightly tan lines, sweat stains or wardrobe malfunctions again.

WHAT TO DO FOR MEN

WEAR A LINEN SHIRT: Every man should have a linen shirt for when the sun comes up.

The only rule is to keep a maximum of three buttons undone.

Natural fibers like linen are breathable so you stay cool.

A few creases are okay, as it’s impossible to keep this material crisp.

However, avoid looking like a crumpled mess – this goes for women too – by pairing a linen piece with something more structured like jeans.

FAT FOR DARK T-SHIRTS: If it’s hot outside, there’s no way around it, you’re going to sweat.

After the Lynx’s whipping, try to hide the sweat stains by wearing dark-colored clothing, such as navy blue or black.

Always avoid gray as it is notoriously bad for showing more sweat stains.

ATTENTION TO COACHES: Sorry, guys, but super hairy fingers and unkempt nails aren’t on many women’s wish lists.

Unless you’re prepared to take care of your feet before heading out, opt for comfortable, reliable sneakers or sneakers.

Just be sure to wear socks to avoid stinky, sticky feet.

There’s a time and a place for sandals – in the comfort of your garden, by the pool or on the beach.

CHOOSE CHINO SHORTS: You might think khakis are just for dapper guys polishing their yachts, but they’re a summer staple.

Shorts, in general, are difficult to get right, but for guys the most important part is the length – they should be just above the knee, like actor Idris Elba’s above.

Longer styles look silly, especially with big pockets that look like they should be full of tools.

DON’T DO IT FOR MEN

CHOOSE COORDINATES: Guys shouldn’t try to channel their inner Erling Haaland in loud prints and colors or bright fabrics.

It’s the ultimate masculine peacoat and makes you look like a lot of effort, and even more so when worn open to show off your abs or dad bod.

Leave them for the Man City star or when you’re at a beach club abroad. Better yet, just save your money.

COMBINE SOCKS AND SANDALS: There’s no getting around it, socks and sandals look horrible.

It’s likely to be a pair of socks that have seen better days and are hiked up to mid-calf and you’ll look like you’re taking out the trash or half asleep.

From Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to US tourists, they’re just not cool.

If you really don’t want to wear sneakers, even Crocs would be preferable.

GO TOPLESS: It’s not that you can never do this – in your own garden it’s fine.

But even if you have the body of a god, we don’t want to see or smell your half-naked body – or be crammed against it on public transport.

Vests are also a no-no, especially when it’s a jersey from a basketball team you’re not even a fan of.

The park is fair game, but it’s certainly not a pub beer garden – you’ll turn everyone out with so much flesh on display.

WEAR SWIMSUITS: Look, we understand. Shorts seem like a good option for when it’s hot – they absorb moisture and are comfortable.

But everything is loose and open to possible wardrobe malfunctions.

It’s also risky business to jump on the current trend among celebrities like actor Paul Mescal of wearing ultra-short boxers as outerwear.

WHAT TO DO FOR WOMEN

USE WHITE: White isn’t the easiest to keep clean, but it’s the best shade for a heat wave and looks effortlessly chic.

It does not absorb sunlight like black, but reflects sunlight and heat, which in turn keeps you cool and comfortable.

It’s also a tone that never goes out of style.

If you get the odd sunscreen stain on your white clothes, give it a quick wipe with soap and water, scrub with a brush, and wash as normal.

PREPARE FOR EXTREMES: With our unpredictable weather, it’s not uncommon to see someone in shorts and with goosebumps after an unexpected downpour, or on the other side of the spectrum someone still wearing black winter tights in 30ºC heat.

When you’re on the fence, opt for a loose combination that will keep you cool but won’t expose you to the elements if it rains, like actress Sophie Turner.

TO COVER: While you may be tempted to don your most modest clothing when the mercury rises above 25ºC, it’s actually been proven that staying covered can keep you cooler.

We’re not advising you to bundle up your winter coat.

But you should opt for light, breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen, and fluid midi skirts, dresses or loose-fitting pants, which billow and create a cool breeze as you walk. Plus, they’re fashionable.

WEAR SHORTS: You can wear shorts at any age, the secret is to get the length right.

Luckily, for those who don’t like showing off too much skin, longer Bermuda-style shorts are in style this year.

Of course, short shorts are allowed, but they won’t make you look cooler. In fact, micro-shorts can make you feel hotter.

Plus, hotpants are wedgie-inducing and often show a lot of ass. Leave them to Kylie Minogue.

DON’T DO IT FOR WOMEN

SHOW YOUR BRA STRAPS: While vests are a staple in summer outfits, there’s really nothing elegant about baring bra straps — especially when they’re a different color than your blouse, like supermodel Gigi Hadid’s here.

Wear a strapless bra underneath.

USE CROCHET: The crochet trend is Cool enough, and while it looks great on Love Island presenter Maya Jama, it’s just not practical.

If the sun is out, you could end up with tragic, mosaic-like tan lines. Plus, it’s essentially mesh – hot and itchy.

For men, knitted polos have come into fashion, disguised as summer clothes, but are made from sweaty synthetic materials. You have been warned.

DON ESPADRILHAS: Espadrilles were once Princess Kate’s favorite summer shoe, but they’ve really gone out of style.

While ’90s flats are making a comeback, espadrilles have been relegated to the back of the wardrobe until their next Rebirth. Gen Z has even nicknamed them “grandma sandals.”

TRY BANDEAU STYLE TOPS: The bandeau, also known as the boob tube, worn by Chrissy Teigen, has to be one of the most unflattering styles.

Yes, you’ll avoid tan lines, but you’ll also spend all day pulling up your top and trying to keep your breasts in place.

At night, it will be covered with your dirty fingerprints and you will have a strange “slip”.
