CLEANING fans are abandoning a popular laundry product because they believe it is “just adding grease” to their cycles.

And not only do they claim their clothes are softer without it, but they also save hundreds of pounds every year.

The product being scrapped is fabric softener – with buying a £4 bottle of the product every fortnight costing £104 a year.

Also known as fabric conditioner, the thick liquid coats clothes with a thin layer of conditioning agents to reduce static cling, soften fibers and leave a pleasant fragrance.

But it turns out that too much fabric softener can leave greasy stains on your clothes that are a nightmare to get out.

As a result, many Brits are ditching the laundry product and even claim their cycles smell just as good without it.

The news comes after cleaning fan Laura Crawford took to Facebook group Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips looking for advice.

She posted a photo of a polo shirt with a grease stain on the front.

“Why are my clothes hanging like this?!” she asked.

“Every once in a while, a piece of clothing will have strange stains that I can’t remove.

“It ruined some items for me and I don’t know how or why.

“I use fabric softener and washing powder in the drawer, nothing in the drum.

“How can I stop this?”

Mrs Hinch’s fans were quick to claim fabric softener is to blame – and some of them revealed they “haven’t used it in years”.

“I gave up using fabric conditioners,” said Carola Muller.

“My clothes are equally nice and soft – and smell great.

“Fabric conditioner actually just adds grease to your clothes.

“I think it’s just a marketing scheme to make us buy things we don’t need.”

“Does it look like grease? In this case, it will probably be too softening,” Lisa Williams added.

“I used to hear that all the time.

“I stopped using fabric softener and haven’t used it since.

“I just use the fabric softener capsules.”

If you’re not ready to ditch laundry conditioner completely, some Brits recommend reducing the amount you put in wash cycles.
