WHEN it comes to weddings, there is a strict set of dress code guidelines to follow.

One woman’s potential choice for her friend’s big day managed to break several style rules at once.

On a Reddit publishuser Blatherskitefight shared a photo of the dress she was considering for the occasion.

In addition to including photos of the front and back of the dress, the wedding guest contextualized the day’s theme.

“I’m going to a backyard wedding next week and I just realized the website calls for formal attire,” she said.

The Redditor explained that their wardrobe options were limited due to the weather.

“I only have autumn/winter formal dresses that would be too hot in this heat, so I scoured the internet and found this beauty,” she wrote.

The floor-length red strappy dress featured a tight corset bodice.

A view from behind showed the crisscrossed straps and laces of the corset.

The bright red material also seemed to wrinkle just below the corset at the lower back.

Before seeking input from her fellow Reddit users, she added the dress to her cart.

“It arrived today and fits like a glove”, reported the author of the post.

Wedding guest dress drama

Despite the perfect fit, she was hesitant about the dress, wondering if it would be appropriate for a wedding.

“I knew it was red, but I didn’t realize until I put it on that it was completely fire engine red,” she said.

Reddit users shared their thoughts on the dress in the comments section.

“Dresses of this style are often made cheaply and look cheap,” one reader pointed out.

‘I’m concerned about the quality of the dress, the bow at the back and the gathered bottom look a bit cheap.’

Dos and Don’ts of Wedding Dress Codes

By Josie Griffiths, Fabulous deputy editor and bride-to-be.

Josie Griffiths said: I will never forget the wedding I went to in October 2022 where a guest wore a white dress.

It was ill-fitting, knee-length, and looked nothing like a real wedding dress, but that didn’t stop everyone from judging her.

The rules about wedding guest attire — which are annoyingly stricter for women than men — are meant to be about “not outshining the bride,” which is actually pretty hard to do on someone else’s wedding day.

But if you get it wrong as a guest, you’ll end up looking a little silly and in front of a bunch of people who don’t know you personally.

It’s just not the occasion for your new white dress, no matter how much online stores love to throw it in the ‘wedding guest’ section.

I would avoid anything too tight/short and ditch the super formal dresses unless the dress code requires them – you don’t want to wear a long sequin dress to a smart casual event.

Personally I don’t like black dresses either, it’s not a funeral.

Otherwise you will be quite safe. Technically, wearing red means you’re in love with your fiancé, but that’s the kind of rule most people would scoff at these days.

I always check the bridesmaids’ color, just to be safe, after the Spanish wedding, where I saw them walk down the aisle in exactly the same dress I had in my Asos shopping basket weeks before.

When in doubt, it’s safest to just check with the bride… but if you’re already doubting your dress, this might be the answer you need.

“I think the bright red color, the boning, the tie at the back and the ruching at the butt make it all too much for the occasion,” agreed another person.

“It looks like a ball gown, it’s very low in the back and it’s a bright red,” said a third Redditor.

“I probably wouldn’t wear it to a backyard wedding.”

“I think it’s too much,” wrote another reader.

I think a tieback cheapens the look of a dress and when you combine the tie back with the tight fit and the boning, the bright red fabric, it doesn’t make for a good look for a wedding.”

Reddit users compared the look to a prom dress and pointed out that it might not be appropriate for the day.
