THE BLT is the country’s favorite sandwich, a survey has found.
Almost 30% of us love bacon, lettuce and tomato between two slices of bread.
The classic combination of meat sarnie and salad dates back to an entry in the Good Housekeeping Everyday cookbook in 1903.
But it became popular after World War II, with the rise of supermarkets.
It beat the humble chicken salad into second place, with tuna mayonnaise and breaded fish into third.
Meanwhile, 66% love putting yesterday’s leftovers into a sarnie and a similar amount said any meal is better with bread.
Soft white bread is the No. 1 bread in the country with 53 percent of us, followed by whole wheat at 30 percent and seeded at 22.
Most people – 85% – can’t enjoy a sandwich without real butter, while 41% prefer mayonnaise and 14% love adding hot sauce, the Hovis survey found.
Baker’s Adrian Mooney said: “There’s no doubt we are a nation of sandwich lovers. We are delighted to see that the classic BLT has stood the test of time.”
In 2022, a former royal chef revealed the Queen’s favorite sandwich – and she’s been eating it for more than nine decades.
After serving as a royal for 15 years, Darren McGrady took to social media to share some of his insights.
He said: “The Queen received jelly coins at nursery when she was a little girl, she has had them for afternoon tea ever since.”
He continued: “Simple, just bread and jam with a little butter – usually strawberry jam.
”We would make the jam at Balmoral Castle with the beautiful Scottish strawberries in the gardens.
