A LIMONCELLO lover has shared her tried and tested method for making the popular liqueur.
She said she learned the fundamental step of the homemade recipe from an “old Italian lady”.
DD (@dishin_withdd) demonstrated how to prepare the drink in a viral video on TikTok.
Limoncello is a lemon-flavored liqueur that is usually served chilled on its own, without a mixer.
It comes from Italy and is produced mainly in the south, where there is an abundance of citrus fruits.
The lemon-flavored drink is easy to enjoy thanks to its sweetness, making it a popular post-dinner digestif.
HOW IS IT DONE
DD started by peeling her lemons following an ancient technique.
“See how you have to peel it?” she said as she removed the yellow part of the lemon peel.
“An old Italian lady once told me: ‘no pith, no white’.”
The pith is the softer white rind beneath the lemon’s harder yellow outer rind.
“Try not to understand,” she reiterated.
After peeling nine organic lemons, she placed the peels in a large glass jar and added a bottle of Everclear.
She noted that she thought limoncello was made with vodka, but traditional recipes call for grain alcohol.
DD explained that the mixture must marinate for 20 days, saying that it will start to turn yellow.
She recommended shaking the bottle well every few days for best results.
After 20 days, she mixes it with sugar and filtered water.
“Enjoy,” she said, approving of his simple recipe.
CROWD REACTION
Several TikTok users weighed in on her limoncello recipe in the comments section of the viral video.
“You don’t need additional preservatives, nothing can survive Everclear,” joked one viewer.
“OK, Everclear is crazy, but a trick from my Italian grandmother is to freeze the lemons and use a vegetable peeler – helps avoid the pith,” added another.
“The best limoncello I’ve ever had used honey instead of sugar,” commented a third.
“Thank you for motivating people,” wrote another person. “Making limoncello is the best. You can also use a high-quality vodka. Thanks for sharing this.”
“A little crumb isn’t so bad, just not a lot,” added another.
