Upon arrival, the Redditor stated in the postThey realized that their friend had not prepared any food or snacks for those participating in the celebrations.

However, the author was left dumbfounded after his companion decided to order takeaway and then asked people to chip in to cover the costs.

The person explained: ”I went to a friend’s housewarming party. They live quite far away, approximately 1 hour by car.

“Not only did we go all the way, but they also didn’t provide food.

“They then decided to order pizzas and asked for their money back.”

Surprised, they wondered if this was a “normal” custom, as they found it difficult to understand what had just happened.

I would generally assume that if a take away was being ordered I should contribute

”I’m Italian, it seems shocking to me that you expect people to travel so far to come see you at your party and also expect people to pay to eat.

”Is it a culture shock or is it petty on their part?”

The post, which has since racked up more than 1,500 likes and interactions, took the popular forum by storm, leaving people completely divided.

Many, like the author, found the situation bizarre and rushed to criticize the organizers of the opening party.

One of them said: “No, it’s not normal, I would provide light food at a housewarming.

”It’s not a full meal, but snacks, pizza, chicken wings, cheese and so on.”

Someone agreed, writing: ”It probably depends on the group of friends, but if I were hosting any kind of event (yes, even a housewarming), I would have snacks, but not a full pizza.

“If I ordered pizza, I would make it clear from the beginning if we were going to share it. Something like “are you hungry? Do you want to share a pizza?”

Tips for a Stress-Free, Memorable Housewarming Party

While organizing a housewarming party can seem overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be that way – check out the tips below to make it memorable and stress-free.

  • Unhurried: According to experts at United van lines, there is no need to rush, no matter how exciting it may seem. Having your party a month – or two – after your moving date is perfectly normal.
  • Send invitations: Since a housewarming party is usually planned as an open event, this allows guests to come and go at a time that suits them best. Choose a duration between four and six hours and if you are not expecting any gifts – let us know in the invitation.
  • Plan your diet: Unless you really want to prepare a full meal, stick to serving finger foods, like a cute DIY grazing board.
  • Skip the decorations: A bouquet of pretty flowers, a bunch of balloons and a “welcome” sign are enough if you insist on having decorations.
  • Select the best music playlist: A good playlist is key to a successful housewarming party that guests are sure to remember. Look for a complete list of crowd-pleasers that most people are familiar with.

”If I didn’t mention the rooms, then it’s ‘on me’ as part of the housewarming.”

A third wrote: “My mate almost punched me for laughing out loud at him for suggesting such a thing. If you can’t afford a party, don’t have one, simple as that.”

However, not everyone considered this “petty” and insisted that “circumstances” also played a big role.

One Redditor said: “Most of my friends and I are on very low incomes.

”I generally assume that if a takeaway was being ordered, I should contribute.”

Another echoed the sentiment, writing, “I think there is a lot of variation in what people offer at a party.

”Generally, I would expect to help if someone ordered takeout.”
