A FOOD blogger and mum has revealed her simple routine for keeping food fresh for weeks.
Amy Cross says she only needs to shop every three weeks because her clever food hacks ensure her produce stays fresh all the time.
The 47-year-old shared a clip on Instagram detailing her method of preparing and storing fruit and vegetables to give them greater longevity.
Everything from berries and lettuce to potatoes and peppers is included, and Amy says the process takes 40 minutes.
“I only go shopping once every three weeks,” Amy, who lives in Washington, told What’s The Jam.
“By washing and storing my produce, it stays fresh all the time and we don’t waste food.”

Amy shares her simple tips with her 120,000 Instagram followers (@thecrosslegacy) and on his YouTube channel.
In a recent post, she filmed her grocery store, explaining how each item is stored for maximum freshness.
The food blogger starts by spending half an hour washing produce in bowls and a salad spinner.
She uses a timer set to two minutes to ensure she doesn’t over-soak fresh food while multitasking to wash different items at a time.
In the video, she starts with the carrots, rinsing them in tap water and then again in vinegar.
She then scrubs them to remove any final dirt.
For the lemons and avocados, she removes the stickers and places them in a bowl of water to rinse.
She washes and chops the celery ends to freeze and make stocks, while the celery stalks are placed in a pan with water and vinegar.
Peppers, lettuce, cucumbers and potatoes are rinsed individually in a similar way.
With onions, Amy says she “listens” to see if the skin looks “wrinkly” — an indicator that it’s becoming dehydrated, in which case she’ll use it first.
Berries and grapes are soaked in water and vinegar and mixed so that all sides are clean.
She shows how dirty strawberry water gets after the initial cleaning, calling it “absolutely disgusting.”
The herbs are also bathed before being dried in the salad spinner, along with salad leaves and lettuce.
Amy explained that after washing everything, she lets the produce dry for two to three hours on the kitchen counter on tea towels.
Shen then spends another 10 minutes storing them in glass jars to extend their longevity.
For scallions, she places them root side down in a jar of water and keeps them on the counter.
Although it takes mom 40 minutes to organize everything after shopping, she says it’s worth it to set aside extra time in the day.
“This time after shopping lets me know I have products that will last for several weeks,” she said.
“Not having product waste saves me a lot of money on groceries.
“If I only go shopping once every three weeks, that doesn’t seem like a waste of time.
“Overall, I’m saving a lot of time preparing food.
“All those quick trips to the store in the past resulted in wasted time and money, now with inflation so high it’s even more important to be able to use the items we buy.”
