A WOMAN whose mother owns a Chinese restaurant has revealed what crispy seaweed is made of and it is blowing people away.
We all love a dash of salty, crunchy goodness on top of our chow mein, but people have been left in total disbelief and ‘devastated’ by what it’s actually made of.
Xiengni took to social media to spill the beans about what he’s made of and how his mother makes it perfect every time.
She said: “Today we’re at my mum’s takeaway and she’s going to show you how easy it is to make crispy seaweed at home.”
The first step was to get the seaweed and it looks like it might be easier to get than you thought.
In fact, crunchy seaweed doesn’t even come from the ocean, it comes from the land.
She revealed that the classic dish is actually made with spring greens.
“Did you know that crispy seaweed is only made from cabbage? Literally cabbage,” said Xiengni.
To make it at home, you need to take some leaves and finely chop them into strips, cutting off the stems.
Then make sure your pan of oil is really hot and put it in for about 30 seconds until it wilts and becomes super crispy.
She then lets it drain and adds seasonings before serving the dish.
“Wow! She’s crunchy,” she added.
The clip posted to his TikTok account @xiensscran It has since gone viral with over 850,000 views and 50,000 likes.
People were surprised at how it was done and quickly took to the comments to share their shock.
One person wrote: “Wait. Crunchy seaweed is not seaweed!! Devastated”.
Another commented: “Wait, isn’t that algae…?”
