THERE’S nothing worse than taking a big bite of roast chicken – only to discover it’s actually cheese and onion.
But now it’s much harder to make that mistake, thanks to a key in the paper bags used by store employees.
Tabz I took it to TikTok to share a look at the bags, writing: “Absolutely innovative stuff from Greggs.
“No more biting into the wrong roast!”
“I think the workers got tired of telling the standards, I’m not going to lie,” Tabz captioned the video.
The bag featured different images for each of the baked goods, including a sausage roll with a wide diagonal pattern indicating a meat one, with a closer vertical line pattern showing a vegan roll.
A vegetable roast has little triangles, a steak roast has diagonal slits, while a chicken roast has a long, wavy line.
The only confusion that can be made is between the roast chicken and the melted sausage, beans and cheese – as the latter has a similar pattern but with slightly shorter lines.
A corned beef roast has small circular indentations at the top, while the cheese and onion roast has arrow lines pointing from right to left.
“Yes! No more biting into my husband’s cake instead of my vegan sausage roll,” one person commented on the video.
As another said: “Yes! because before my grandfather bought me a sausage roll but it wasn’t vegan and I ate it!”
“I’ve eaten a lot of Greggs in my life, but I never realized it!” a third was amazed.
“Thank God!” someone said.
“I once ordered a load of steak, got some chicken and almost threw up – that was horrible!”
But others insisted the key has been in the suitcases for a long time.
“It’s due to allergies so we don’t give out the wrong one and get sued,” one wrote.
“This has been a thing forever, how have you not noticed?” another added.
As a third said: “They’ve always done that, haven’t they?”
“This is what the workers have behind the counter,” said another person.
Greggs in numbers
Did you know that Greggs sausage rolls have 96 layers of dough?
The first Greggs opened in 1951 on Gosforth High Street.
There are also 2,473 stores nationwide – a thousand more than McDonald’s.
Greggs is now valued at £2.6 billion thanks to its budget deals.
Almost £2 in every £100 spent on hospitality in the UK is done at a Greggs.
Newcastle still remains the sausage roll capital of the UK, with Geordies scoffing at 17.9 million of them a year.
While others insisted they didn’t need a key to know which was which offer from Greggs.
“As fat as I am – I know all the patterns!” one wrote.
“I don’t need this – I’ve already memorized it,” added another.
“Is it bad that I know this without the photos…?” a third commented.
