The bargain hunter found himself alone in Tesco just before closing time, so he emptied the shelves of discounted shopping and saved a small fortune in the process.

Taking to Facebook group Yellow Sticker Tips, Tricks and Shoppinghe posted a photo of himself very impressive amount of food that covered most of the living room floor.

Alongside the photo, he explained: “I got a warning that my phone storage was almost full so I started going through old photos and videos to delete them and this one popped up again on Christmas Eve 2016.

“My best move ever!

“About £400 for £40.

“I was the only person in the store about 20 minutes before closing, so I grabbed everything.”

I was the only person in the store about 20 minutes before closing so I grabbed the lot.

Mateus

It didn’t take long for the post to be flooded with over 452 likes and 50 comments, with many pointing out the price it would cost today due to inflation.

“Today that would probably cost £800,” wrote one.

A second commented: “Don’t get too many offers like that now.”

A third added: “Those were the days!”

Elsewhere, others were full of praise for Matthew and were quick to praise him for his mega discount on food purchases.

When do supermarkets launch yellow sticker bargains?

The length of time supermarkets reduce their products varies between stores.

Here’s a rough supermarket-by-supermarket guide:

Aldi

Aldi uses a red sticker to show reductions on fresh produce such as bread, meat, fruit and vegetables.

This is when they reach the last day of validity.

Items with red stickers are most commonly found at opening and closing times.

IN

Reduction times may vary from store to store, but are most likely to occur close to closing time.

Asda

Asda said Which? that the yellow stickers are applied twice a day – morning and evening.

Cooperative

The Co-op told The Sun that its reduced clearance prices are usually applied around four hours before the store closes.

Lidl

Lidl has a similar procedure to Asda and Aldi with twice-daily reductions.

However, individual stores may choose to reduce prices throughout the day.

Morrison

Online shoppers said Morrisons has the best bargains first thing in the morning.

However, the store said Which? There are no specific times for yellow sticker price reductions.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s told The Sun that it is at the discretion of the store manager to offer discounts.

However, shoppers have reported that the best deals are in the evening from 6pm onwards.

Tesco

Tesco said there is no specific time for the reduction, but again, most people have found prices to be reduced from 6pm.

Waitrose

As with most other stores, Waitrose shoppers said the best reductions are found before closing.

However, the store stated that there is no specific time for applying the yellow stickers.

“Absolutely fantastic! Wow, I’m impressed,” enthused one social media user.

Another recalled: “One year I ate a dozen pieces of lamb and turkey ham at 90% off, filled a decent-sized freezer, and fed my family for a month!

Another wrote: “Amazing – there at the right time!”

“Have you finished eating everything yet?” joked another.

And one more chimed in: “Wow, wow, that’s what I call a haul!”
