A TALENTED cake designer has revealed her “really difficult” role in a fan-favourite football star’s wedding.

Former Rangers and Hearts star Andy Halliday and Jilly Cross, 29, had an intimate wedding ceremony with fewer than 30 guests in their parents’ backyard last Thursday.

It came after the down-to-earth duo made things official at City Chambers in Glasgow and managed to get a ride back to the reception in Jilly’s uncle’s black taxi.

It wasn’t just the venue and guest list that were relaxed.

The new Mr & Mrs Halliday chose mozzarella sticks, penne arrabbiata and chips as part of their wedding menu.

AND Jilly snubbed a designer wedding dress in favor of a classic dress and white blazer from her own fashion brand Dula.

She completed her outfit with a mini veil and a pair of her mother’s ’90s Chanel heels, which she considered her “something borrowed” for the day.

Their jaw-dropping wedding cake, however, was anything but understated.

While it looked simple and elegant, the three-tiered creation featured nearly 2,000 intricate details.

At 32 inches, it was also just three feet tall.

But cake decorator Christie Boyle is no stranger to celebrity requests and even prepared a wedding cake for comedian Kevin Bridges.

The 31-year-old owner Cake days per week in Glasgow’s East End, said: “I’ve worked with Jilly before, I make all her cakes. I’ve also made her mum’s 60th cake and her brother’s cakes.

“They always used me, which is really good. So I was very flattered to be invited to something so special.

“But she’s so easy to work with. And yes, she became a kind of friend, because we worked together so many times.

“She said, without a doubt, of course I want you to do it. So it was a really easy process, she’s honestly the most laid back person ever.

“She really trusts me, which is really nice. Every time I make a cake, she gives me a lot of creative control. I feel very, very, very privileged.”

Christie used more than 1,700 individually hand-cut wafer paper ribbons to create the dreamy, elegant textured base for the cake.

In total, it took two days to create.

Revealing the details of the process, the cake genius said: “Having to sit down and put everything together, this is the longest part, gluing all the little pieces of wafer paper together and gluing them together so they can then stick to the cake.

“It’s actually a very difficult medium when you use wafer paper.

“When water gets in, it becomes sticky, so it becomes very sticky. You need to be well groomed and very, very soft.

“Literally, if it gets wet, it turns into mud.”

She added: “My assistant helped me with the bottom layer, which was the biggest, and then I did the other two top layers myself.

“I just put on a podcast and managed to get through it.

“It was a true labor of love.”

And ever since, people have called it the most beautiful wedding cake they’ve ever seen.

One said: “Wow. I’ve never seen a cake finished like this. Absolutely stunning. So delicate.”

A second wrote: “Holllly smackeroonies!! This is incredibly awesome!!”

“My God, just incredible!! You are the best,” said a third.

A fourth added: “I knew it would be one of your creations!! Absolutely breathtaking.”

“Impressive, this is art,” insisted a fifth.

Meanwhile, a sixth said: “This really is the most stunning wedding cake I have ever seen.”
