WETHERSPOONS pubs and restaurants are a national staple, with customers enjoying cheap drinks, comfortable surroundings and family-friendly meals.

But one customer was in for a big surprise when the dish arrived – it wasn’t the food that was unexpected, but the red plate on which it was served.

What do the red Wetherspoon signs mean?

The mystery of the red Wetherspoons signs has led to a heated debate on Reddit, with many people speculating what they could mean.

Fortunately, a spokesperson for the chain cleared up the mystery surrounding the dishes.

They told Fabulous: “Wetherspoon trialled a red plate in a small number of pubs to use for children’s meals, to ensure all children’s meals were served on a cold plate.

‌“The company has evolved since then and has just launched a melamine plate for the entire children’s menu that matches the design of the children’s menu.

‌”But there will be stock of the old red plate in circulation, until they break.

“There are no plans to change the standard blue license plate anytime soon.”

How did customers react to the red signs?

When a Reddit user’s boyfriend received food on an unexpected red plate at a Wetherspoons pub, they started Reddit to share the surprise.

Post a photo with the caption: “My boyfriend got a red plate at Wetherspoons.”

Turns out they weren’t alone in this experience.

Others have also reported receiving red license plates over the years, sparking a lively conversation on Reddit.

The discussion quickly became a mix of fun and intrigue.

One Redditor humorously suggested: “It’s like the Wetherspoons equivalent of a golden ticket.

“There are only five of these dishes, and anyone who purchases one will receive a free tour of the Wetherspoon factory and a lifetime supply of pub grub and beer from countries outside the EU.”

Another user echoed the sentiment, saying, “Spoon plates are always blue; I’ve never seen a red one before.”

A third added: “Never seen a red sign. Happy for you.”

The buzz even reached X, formerly Twitter, where users continued to discuss the elusive red sign.

One tweeted: “So I went to Wetherspoons with my friend today before going to India and bought a red plate!?

“Has anyone seen one before?”

Another encouraged sharing, saying: “RT this photo of the elusive red Wetherspoons plate and your 2020 will be blessed with good luck.”

A former Wetherspoons employee chimed in, revealing he had never encountered a red sign during his time at the company.

Is it possible to buy a Wetherspoons plate?

In fact, it is possible to buy Wetherspoons dishes because the range is not exclusive to the company, although I have been using them for over a decade.

The line is called Vintage Print Prague Victorian Calico and is available in blue and red.

Plates are available to purchase online at ecookshop.co.ukwith sets of four starting at £15 and prices going up to £27 depending on the size of the dish.

The dishes are made by Churchill China Pottery, founded in 1795 and based in Stoke-on-Trent.

Churchill China is known for its high-quality, design-focused tableware.

The company combines centuries of ceramics experience with modern technology to offer innovative tableware.

Churchill China said it “captures the essence of the 1960s family caravan holiday” and consists of “a mix and match of patchwork prints and a burst of uplifting colour”.

It also sells to the retail sector, collaborating with brands such as Jeff Banks, Jamie Oliver and Disney, and has other English brands, such as Queens and James Sadler.
