Zelda (@ZeldasLongHair) has earned more than 46,000 subscribers on YouTube, where he shares hair-related ASMR content.

The 23-year-old from Savannah, GA went viral on the video-sharing platform when she revealed how she grew her hair so long.

In conversation with The US Sun, she revealed the challenges of maintaining her hair.

NO SPLIT ENDS

Zelda has racked up more than 10 million views on a YouTube short showing the moment she received a “big chop” in August 2023.

Although she only cut 3cm, she said it was “big and scary” as she hadn’t cut more than an inch in over seven years.

“It will probably be another six years before I cut off another few inches again,” she said.

“Instead of getting regular big hits, I advocate everyone using the search and destroy method.

“I spend about 10 minutes a few days a week looking for split ends or damage in my hair, and trim the hair to a healthy point.

“This way, the damage is eliminated without sacrificing nearby healthy strands.

“It takes a lot longer, but it saves my length.”

NATURAL BEAUTY

Zelda said she has been wearing her hair in protective styles, like a low ponytail or a side braid, since middle school.

She also avoided putting harsh chemicals, like dye or bleach, on her locks.

“I certainly thought about dying my hair and doing more with it when I was a teenager, but my strict parents stopped me from doing those things,” she said.

“Seven years later, I think it was for the best.

“I estimate that the ends of my hair are around 10 years old, and have been kept in good condition thanks to avoiding chemical treatments or coloring.”

If I had to bend down to pick something up off the floor, half my hair would turn into a broom.

Zelda said the women in her family are genetically blessed with “thick, healthy” hair, but she is the first to grow her hair beyond tailbone length.

“Especially on my mom’s side, their hair is noticeably thick but regularly colored and trimmed,” she said.

“I’m the first to grow hair this long.”

STYLE SECRETS

Zelda was bombarded with comments and glared at for having long hair while studying in Japan.

She said that as a foreigner she “stood out like a sore thumb,” but in America her braids don’t get as much attention.

“But when someone does speak, it will be a short, simple comment like ‘Your hair is so long’ half the time,” she said.

“The other half will be one of the following 4 questions: ‘How did you farm?

“’Why did you let it grow so much? How long does it take to wash? How often do you wash?’

“I always try to answer their questions patiently, but it can get repetitive.”

She revealed that she hides her long hair when she goes shopping or protects it with a wide headband.

She said that having knee-length braids got in the way when she bent down to pick something up off the floor, as her hair “turned into a broom.”

“If I’m trying to do yoga, I need to make sure the floor is clean before I start,” she said.

“But over time, I learned tricks to keep my hair out of the way quickly.

“One of my favorites is to lightly wrap my braid around my neck.

“Put the ends into the braided necklace and it will stay in place for about five minutes. Enough time to do some cleansing or yoga.”

Zelda said she combs her hair with a wide headband if she needs it to be out of the way for a long time.

“When I sleep, I always wear a hat that helps keep my hair tidy and contained in bed,” she said.

“I talk about all of these topics and more in my upcoming book: The Ultimate Guidebook to Growing Long, Healthy Hair.”

Physical and digital copies of Zelda’s book will be available for purchase on Amazon later this month.

She will notify her YouTube subscribers and Instagram followers as soon as it is officially published.

“My book covers all the most common questions I get, like washing tips and tricks, hair care tools and products, trimming your own hair, and scientifically proven methods to make your hair grow faster,” she said.
