AFTER fighting acne and rosacea, a woman decided to solve her skin care problems – and discovered that his love life was to blame.

She noticed that after her boyfriend left town for five days, her face started to clear up.

Editor Ladylazaroo explained the situation in a post on the social media platform.

“My skin improved really quickly when my boyfriend went on vacation,” she said.

“My acne was healing without new breakouts and my skin was noticeably less red.”

However, when her boyfriend returned, so did her skin problems.

“I thought it was a small change I made to my routine, but I’m not sure anymore.”

At first, she thought the culprit might be foods containing gluten or dairy.

“Is this a case of the notorious ‘boyfriend look’?” she asked.

“Now that I think about it, my skin got really bad when I moved in with him too.

THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

Several Redditors chimed in with their own theories about why her skin reacts around her boyfriend.

Many pointed out that his beard could be a possible trigger for her problems.

“I had an allergic reaction on my face when I started dating my boyfriend,” one wrote.

“[I] I went to a dermatologist and that’s basically what he said.

“[It] It doesn’t mean it’s dirty, people apparently just have different types of microorganisms on their faces, and sometimes your skin reacts to theirs.”

What is “boyfriend air?”

“Boyfriend air” is a concept, widespread mainly on social media platforms such as TikTok, referring to the decline in a woman’s appearance after spending time with her boyfriend.

Some attribute this to an adjustment in self-care routines, like speeding up skin care and makeup. New relationships can also cause women to be more stressed than usual or spend less time picking out an outfit to match their boyfriends’ (generally) shorter routines.

Another said it wasn’t the bacteria, but the hair itself.

“His beard is irritating your skin,” they said.

“He may wash it three times a day, but it is the mechanical aggravation, not a germ/bacteria, that is likely causing his skin problems.”

Others pointed to her boyfriend’s stress as causing the outbreaks.

“When he was gone, everything was calm and peaceful and everything was in order,” the original poster said in response.

“It was nice not having to worry about caring for another human or being too suffocated.”
