Dr.cosmetic dermatologist and physician, shared the four common skin care myths to avoid with The US Sun.

She explained that these tips, in addition to being ineffective, can be expensive and harmful to the skin.

MYTHBUSTERS

King first advised against the assumption that expensive skincare products are better than their drugstore counterparts.

“A myth in all areas of skin care is that expensive products are more effective,” she said.

“[That is] definitely not true – some really cheap skincare products can be great.”

The expert said what matters most is how your skin responds to the product you use and “how you like the feel of it.”

In the words of singer Jessie J, you should “forget the price tag.”

WASTE OF WATER

Another myth addressed by Dr. King was the correlation between hydration and hydrated skin.

“Water is good for overall health, and a severely dehydrated person’s skin will benefit from fluids,” she said.

“But the average person’s skin does not reflect the amount of water consumed.”

Instead, she advised using a good moisturizer with humectants, emollients and occlusives.

She explained that these ingredients will do much more to improve skin hydration than drinking water.

TALES OF TANNING

I’m 47 and I always get asked about my youthful skin – a $10 anti-aging product burns a little, but I love it, I use it twice a week

King also warned that “there is no such thing as a healthy tan.”

“Another myth is that it’s okay to tan as long as you’re not burning. Not true!” she said.

She highlighted that any sun exposure can cause damage to the skin, and this damage is cumulative throughout life.

“Tanning is a defense mechanism used by our skin cells when their DNA is damaged,” she explained.

Dermatologist-Approved Anti-Aging Tips

Dermatologist Dr. Brendan Camp shared his dermatologist-approved tips with The US Sun.

  • Stop using tanning beds.
  • Do not use sunscreen to contour your face.
  • Wear driving gloves to protect your hands from the sun. He likes Coolibar Gannett UPF 50+ UV Gloves$15.99 to $39.
  • Exercise, eat a healthy diet and get enough sleep.
  • Do not drink excessively or smoke.

LIES AND LESSONS

Although age-defying celebrity Jennifer Lopez recommends it as anti-aging, Dr. King declared that olive oil is not good for the skin.

On a fashion videothe pop star revealed how the kitchen staple was beneficial for her skin.

“When I was young, my mom, my grandmother, my aunts all had crazy beauty secrets,” she said.

“One of them was the olive oil that we actually used and created the Olive Complex [for my brand].”

JLo launched JLo Beauty in 2021 with olive oil as the main ingredient to achieve her everlasting glow.

Dr. King explained that olive oil is not recommended for use on the skin because it is high in oleic acid, which can disrupt the skin’s barrier function.

“Oils rich or well-balanced in linoleic acid are generally recommended for the skin, while oils rich in oleic acid, such as olive oil, are not considered the best options for the skin,” he added.

While many experts prefer more natural alternatives, Dr. King suggested this may not be the best option.
