I saw a trichologist – a hair and scalp specialist – who said my brush was damaging my hair and recommended a softer, more natural boar bristle brush.
This week, I put three to the test.
BUDGET
DENMAN D81M Medium Finishing Brush with Mixed Bristles (£12, lookfantastic.com): When purchasing a boar bristle brush, I quickly learned that they are not cheap.
This is by far the most affordable option here, but it has nylon bristles along with boar bristles – and it was actually my mom’s favorite brush when I was younger, so I’m already familiar with it.
Nylon brushes definitely help with detangling wet hair as they are more resilient, and I can imagine they would be a godsend for thick hair.
But my fine hair got pretty static every time I used this, and it didn’t feel as straight as with others — although it’s definitely smoother than the brush I used before.
MIDDLE RANGE
CHRISTOPHE Robin Travel Hairbrush with Natural Boar and Wood Bristles, (£49, lookfantastic.com): There is a big jump in price between mixed bristle brushes and pure boar bristle brushes.
This was the cheapest and most reliable boar bristle brush I could find – which says a lot.
It’s smaller than the other two, so I found it took a lot longer to style my hair and I had to resort to sectioning when wet to speed up the process.
The wooden handle is comfortable to hold, but I found the bristles a little soft.
If you have shoulder-length or shorter hair, this may not be a problem.
But that meant it didn’t do a good job of detangling my waist-length locks, although it’s great for creating a sleek back bun.
LUX
LA BONNE Brosse N.01 The Universal Hair Care Brush, (£138, libertylondon. with): Before I even knew about the benefits of boar bristle brushes, I had been trying to justify spending on this work of art (no exaggeration) ever since I saw Molly Mae using one of the baby pink brushes in a YouTube video.
I hate to say it, but even without taking into consideration how Insta-worthy the design is, I thought it was the most efficient brush of the three tested.
The bristles are sturdy enough to detangle hair without snagging or pulling, but soft enough not to scratch your scalp.
Sometimes you really do get what you pay for, unfortunately.
