Editor Realex3 shared her skincare advice in a viral post.

They explained that the cost-effective technique, while controversial, was a game-changer for dry skin.

“Homemade tallow churning is the best thing I’ve ever done for my skin,” they wrote.

Slugging involves layering an occlusive moisturizing product over other skin care steps as the last step of a nighttime routine.

They opted for a homemade beef tallow mask to intensely hydrate dry skin.

“[I] I bought 2.5 kilos of suet from the local butcher and cooked it in a crock pot in my kitchen, following a YouTube video over the course of a week,” they said.

Beef tallow is beef fat that has been cooked to remove all impurities.

Their naturally dry skin, they added, was even more dehydrated thanks to a topical prescription they were using.

“I use Retin-A every morning and take tallow at night,” they said.

The results shocked us, especially when considering the mask’s affordable price.

“My skin is glowing. No acne; it’s amazing and only cost me $2.30 for two months,” they said.

A knowledgeable commentator explained why beef tallow is having a moment.

“[It’s] packed with fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K that are easy on the skin and penetrate deeper, providing faster restoration,” they explained.

“Sebum induces the production of collagen and elastin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.”

Benefits of beef tallow

Beauty fans took to social media to share their homemade beef tallow recipes.

TikTok alone has more than 1,500 posts with the hashtag #beeftallowskincare.

Skincare enthusiasts cooked beef fat to remove all impurities and moisture and used it as a moisturizer.

Dermatologists explained the potential benefits of the all-natural ingredient for Daily Health.

Joshua Zeichner, associate professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, explained that beef tallow can provide the same fats that our skin naturally produces.

“There is little harm in applying beef tallow to the skin, although there are certainly more cosmetically elegant and well-formulated moisturizers to do the job,” he said.

“When applied to the skin, it provides emollient benefits to smooth rough cells on the skin’s surface [as well as] hydration benefits.”

Benjamin Knight Fuchs, a skin care chemist, added that beef tallow may have some benefits due to its cholesterol content.

Despite being rich in vitamins, Fuchs explained that its true benefits are dubious at best because the skin may not be able to absorb it all.

“When it comes to cellular activity and overall skin health benefits, there is very little reason to recommend [beef tallow],” he said.

“Sebum is PERFECT for preventing premature skin aging.”

Others have shared similar skin care experiences with beef tallow.

“I started using beef tallow after some research and hearing good things,” said one commenter.

“I bought 7 pounds on Amazon, [and] so far so good.”

A fan attested to the efficiency and cost-benefit of the ingredient.

“I bought an 8-ounce jar of pre-made beef tallow on Etsy, and it’s blended and processed to the point where it doesn’t smell!” they said.

“I totally recommend it. You need so little for the bottle to last forever.”
