Gina Conway is a hair care expert who has joined the industry data platform Alt Index.

She has three luxury salons in London offering highlights and beauty treatments.

She said there are several reasons why, after age 45, up to 20% of people lose “up to 50%” of their hair.

These include higher levels of stress, medications, genetics, an unbalanced diet, and scalp health issues.

Speaking to The US Sun, she revealed how to approach each issue.

STRESSED WIRES

Conway said it’s common for trauma, work and relationships to cause stress that causes hair loss.

She said identifying the cause of stress is key to dealing with falling.

“Stress is one of the most important things linked to hair loss in people outside the age when hair loss occurs naturally,” she said.

HUNGRY HAIR

Conway said diet is the second most important factor in hair loss, as tresses require the right proteins for health.

“I can tell if someone is vegetarian just by looking at their hair,” she said.

“It tends to be dry and opaque, dull. It has no shine.

“So if you’re vegetarian, that’s fine – but you can use supplements to get omega-3s into your system.

“I always say to those who eat meat and fish, it’s all oily fish that will do wonders for your hair.

“If you find it looks dull and dry, you need to increase your vitamin B12, B complexes and vitamin E.”

LIFELESS LOCKS

Conway said illnesses can have a similar impact on the body as stress.

She recommended taking a closer look at any medication when experiencing thinning.

“To heal, your hair, skin and nails are the last things to be nourished,” she said.

One of the best things to do for our scalp is a scalp massage.

“That’s why we often have hair loss, because your body isn’t being fed these things.

“The medication may be somehow blocking your hair growth.”

CLAMPS FOR LEATHER LEATHER

Conway said that “we are always shedding skin cells,” but we neglect scalp health while investing in other skin care.

“Our scalp has more capillaries than any other place on the body,” she said.

“So everything you put on your scalp and hair goes straight into your bloodstream.”

She said products that contain plastic leave your hair looking great because it leaves a layer, but it’s healthier to use organic hair products.

Conway said daily massages can also improve scalp health.

“We need to know whether we are producing oil or underproducing it, and we need to regain that balance,” she said.

“We naturally have an acid balance and if our acid balance is out of sync, we are potentially more susceptible to allergies or a bacterial scalp infection.

“One of the best things to do for our scalp is a scalp massage.

“Even if it’s five minutes a day, or when you’re in the shower, do some slow, deep strokes as well as some quick, vigorous strokes.

“Quick, vigorous movements on a dry scalp will exfoliate dead skin.

“Slow movements will promote blood circulation.

“And in that blood are all your beautiful vitamins and minerals and everything that feeds your skin cells.”

CARE OF THE BOILER

Conway said hair loss can also be caused by genetics and it’s important to catch hair loss early to prevent it from getting worse.

“There are things we can do to keep you on track,” she said.

“If you can catch it before you’ve been losing your hair for seven years, it will probably grow back, but if you don’t catch it, those cells will go dormant and eventually die.

“A lot of people say, ‘Oh, my hair looks good now, that’s not going to happen.’ But if you wait too long, he won’t come back.”
