WHILE many prepare for their summer holidays by soaking up the sun and regularly diving into the sea, it’s important to look after your hair in the scorching heat.

Hair care guru and expert Gina Conway said that there is a certain routine that we should follow when taking care of our hair in the coming months.

Going into detail about the advice, Gina says drying your hair with a towel is “good”, but if you rub it – “it can cause a lot of damage”.

But in terms of what’s an “absolute no” for our hair, she says using heated hair tools without heat protectant is the “worst thing you can do” to your hair.

In an interview with Alt IndexShe is also a fan of dry shampoo – and, as we approach summer, she recommends using sunscreen on her scalp and hair, as well as “giving her hair a break”.

Gina continues: “A lot of people go on holiday in the warmer months, so you often talk about sunscreen in your hair. I recommend doing this.

“And since it’s now cool to have a ‘wet look’ in your hair, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t. You can use sunscreen for your hair or just regular sunscreen. Either is fine.

“Another thing in the summer is to give your hair a break. Everyone likes beachy waves, so take this as a sign to let your hair down a little.

“I would recommend that people start using hair oils more in the summer as they try to be a little more natural with their hair.”

Gina also recommends being careful when towel drying your hair.

Quick and affordable tips to thicken your hair

She says: “Towel drying is fine, but never rub your hair as this will lift the cuticle and break it, which can make it more static.

“I always say to squeeze your hair with a towel, add the product, comb it and let it dry naturally until about 90%. Then for the last 10 minutes, use that blow dryer.”

But on the bright side, Gina is a big fan of using dry shampoo to add volume after washing.

She says: “It’s a great extender. It’s great for giving you that messy, sexy Bridgette Bardot look. But it also saves time during the week.”

The 4 phases of the hair growth cycle

Hair experts at Philip Kingsley have shared the four stages of the hair growth cycle: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen.

Anagen Phase: Also known as the ‘Growth Phase’ or ‘Active Phase’, this is when the hair root cells divide more quickly, forming more new hair.

During the anagen phase, hair grows about half an inch per month [about six inches a year]and faster in summer than in winter.

This phase of the hair growth cycle lasts an average of three to five years.

Catagen Phase: After the Anagen Phase, your hair cycle enters a short transition phase known as the Catagen Phase, which signals the end of active hair growth and cuts off individual strands from the blood supply and cells that produce new hair.

Approximately three percent of all hair is in this stage at any given time and it lasts for about 10 days.

Telogen Phase: The third stage of the natural hair growth cycle is the Telogen Phase, a resting period in which strands remain in the follicles but are not actively growing.

An estimated 10 to 15 percent of your hair is in the telogen phase at any given time.

The Telogen Phase lasts about three months or 100 days.

Exogenous Phase: The final phase of the Hair Growth Cycle, when individual hairs are released from their follicles and fall out.

Now the whole process starts again.

Gina also urges beauty fans to avoid using heated tools on dry hair.

She says: “I would say never use heated tools on dry hair without using a spray protectant. It literally ruins everything good you put in your hair.

“Find cute ways to style your hair without heat. No-heat rollers are a game changer. You get incredible results without damaging your hair.
