Eva Proudman helps around 250 patients monthly in her Trichology clinics to improve the condition of their hair.

She said that regardless of age, anyone between the ages of 16 and 90 can see an improvement in “growth, texture, diameter and density.”

Speaking to The US Sun, Proudman shared her expert hair care advice.

HOME HAIR TRICKS

Proudman revealed that there are home remedies that can be effective in maintaining healthier hair and scalp.

Among them is the routine use of a Manta Pulse Hair & Scalp brush to massage.

“Scalp massage is something you can easily do at home,” Proudman said.

“There is a lot of research evidence about the benefits of scalp massage.

“The Manta Pulse is a really pleasurable and relaxing thing to do, bringing good blood flow to the hair follicle to stimulate hair follicle activity for optimal hair growth.”

The tool that appeared on Gwyneth Paltrow’s show Goop it has a 4.7 star rating out of 5 at Nordstrom, where it costs $85.

Proudman said rosemary and tea tree are among the “beneficial” ingredients to look for when shopping for shampoo.

She said they provide “excellent” relief from itchy and flaky scalps.

Meanwhile, the amino acids in medicated conditioners can add volume while strengthening and smoothing strands.

Quick and affordable tips to thicken your hair

“Glycerin is a great ingredient because it is a humectant, meaning it pulls moisture from your hair and scalp to hydrate it,” she said.

“Hair is made up of 10% water and it is often dehydration that leaves hair dull and lifeless, so using a product with glycerin is more beneficial than oils, as many oils do not moisturize.”

Proudman recommended letting wet hair air dry rather than using damaging tools.

“Braiding or tousling damp hair and leaving it overnight will give your hair great waves and curls without the need to use heat or chemicals, and it can look beautiful,” she said.

STYLE CLIPS

Proudman said hair loss can be reduced by opting for styles that don’t pull on strands.

“Try not to wear ponytails or braids that are too high and tight,” she said.

“This can put tension on the hair, leading to what is called traction alopecia, where the hair is under tension for a long time and then lost, and in some cases it can also cause permanent loss.

“If you tie your hair, use a silk elastic or smooth tie, not a rough elastic, as this can also break and damage your hair.”

Proudman said vitamin B12 and minerals like iron and zinc are essential for good hair health.

She also frequently sees patients struggling to incorporate enough protein into their diets.

“I would always advise seeking professional advice and, most likely, blood tests so that clinical analysis of your needs can be made and appropriate advice can be given,” she said.

“Don’t just buy a multivitamin and hope for the best, often these standard formulations available on the market don’t always have the levels of vitamins and minerals needed to treat hair health issues.”

She said the time it takes to see an improvement in hair condition varies.

“As a guide, it may take 3 to 6 months to start seeing improvements and up to 2 or 3 years to fully resolve the issue,” she said.

“We have to remember that hair is the second fastest dividing cell in the body but it is not essential, so it is always the last thing to benefit from any treatments we may advise and it takes time and patience to see results.”

What causes hair loss?

Proudman revealed that there are several reasons why hair loss can occur.

“Hair loss comes in many forms, from male to female pattern, which is an inherited trait,” she said.

“An interruption of the growth cycle called telogen effluvium, often caused by illness, diet, stress, lifestyle and, in some cases, medications.

“There are then a number of different autoimmune-type conditions, such as patchy hair loss called alopecia areata, which can and often does grow back.

“And scar-type immunological conditions such as Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA), where the hairline recedes along with the sides of the hair, this causes permanent loss but can also be controlled with specific treatments.”
