Hayley Walker, who works as a makeup artist for Just my lookexplained that product stains “spread easily and are notoriously difficult to remove.”

“With the right cleaning techniques and solutions, you can remove these stains and save the fabric,” she said.

For her first recommendation, she advised placing the stained area under running water as soon as possible.

“As soon as you notice a stain, avoid rubbing it, as this can deepen the stain into the fabric, making it difficult to remove or possibly causing a permanent mark,” she advised.

Walker highlighted the importance of rinsing the material under high pressure in cold water.

“This method helps to loosen the product and simplifies the stain removal process,” he explains.

Next, she suggested pre-soaking the stain in liquid detergent and using the bottle cap to blot the affected area.

“Alternatively, mix one tablespoon of dish soap into two cups of hot water, then use a clean white cloth to blot the stain with the solution,” Walker said.

“Repeat this process on the affected area until no makeup residue is transferred to the cloth.”

For the next step, she recommended placing the stained item in the washing machine on a regular cycle.

“For maximum results, wash on a high temperature, but always check the item’s care label first,” he advised.

Once the cycle is finished, remove the item of clothing and let it air dry.

If you’re in a pinch and don’t have laundry detergent, Walker suggested adding laundry detergent.

“Because oil is a common ingredient in makeup products, dish soap’s ability to break down oil makes it particularly effective,” she explained.

“Applying a few drops of detergent helps loosen the stain and dissolve grease and oil, making cleaning easier.”

Walker recommended leaving the detergent on the stain for five to 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water and letting it dry.

“If the stain remains visible, use a soft-bristled brush to remove the product from the fabric fibers,” he suggested.

FIXES ON THE GO

And if you’re somewhere without cleaning products on hand, Walker revealed the beauty items that can help right away.

Walker revealed that makeup remover can work to remove products from clothes as well as your face.

She emphasized the importance of selecting an oil-free remover to avoid worsening the problem.

“Eye makeup remover works particularly well for this,” she explained.

Walker recommended treating the stain with a disposable mascara spoolie and a towel.

“Place the product on the towel and apply a small amount of remover to the affected area, using a swab wrapped in cotton to help with removal,” she said.

“Gently work the stain in a back-and-forth motion for a few seconds at a time, stopping to assess progress.

“If the stain persists, repeat the process and then let the item dry.”

For her final recommendation, she suggested using a regular hair product to eliminate makeup stains.

“Hairspray doesn’t just work miracles on hair,” explained the makeup artist.

“This is a quick-fix technique perfect for cleaning on the go,” she said.

“Just apply an alcohol-based hairspray to the stain and let it work its magic.

“Once dry, wipe with a damp cloth to remove any residue.”
