Rossano Ferretti has founded more than 20 luxury hair salons and is the man behind Rossano FerrettiParma Italian hair care line.

His list of high-profile clients includes Kate Middleton, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lawrence and Lady Gaga.

The hair guru explained that while it’s important to maintain a proper routine while traveling, it doesn’t have to be difficult.

“A pre-, during- and post-flight hair care routine is essential to keeping hair healthy,” he said.

“There has been a huge increase in skincare routines during flights, but people often forget about their hair.

“The flat environment can be very drying to your strands, especially if your hair is already susceptible to dryness – but there are [are] some steps you can take to keep your hair healthy while traveling on a plane.”

To keep your hair hydrated, he recommends nourishing your hair from the inside out.

“The air inside the plane is extremely dry, which can lead to dehydration of the hair, so hydration is essential,” said Ferretti.

“Make sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your flight to ensure your hair is well hydrated.”

Before a flight, he recommends adding a light moisturizer to your hair, like his Rossano Ferretti Parma Vivace leave-in conditioning spray.

Others who feel the need can also opt for a deep conditioning treatment for an extra layer of protection.

“Look for products with natural oils and proteins to maintain hydration,” he insisted.

One mistake many people make, Ferretti added, is washing their hair on boarding day.

“Avoid washing your hair on the day of the flight. Washing your hair daily will strip your scalp of its natural oils, which is necessary to ensure your scalp is healthy and your hair is strong and has a natural shine,” he said.

With a little preparation and the right products, you can keep your hair looking and feeling its best no matter where your travels take you.

“You can refresh your hair between styles and at the same time cleanse and nourish your scalp.

“If you want to update [your] hair again during the flight, use a dry shampoo”, he advised.

Ferretti suggested his brand Vivace Cream Dry Shampoowhich he said is formulated to “absorb excess oil and sweat” without leaving any “powder or talc residue.”

Styling steps like avoiding heat, wearing protective hairstyles and silk accessories can also make a big difference in the health of your strands.

“Tight hairstyles can damage certain hair types; a soft, messy braid is the perfect way to keep your hair under control,” he said.

“These styles minimize exposure to dry air and reduce the risk of tangling and breakage. Plus, they can be a stylish way to get to your destination.

“Silk is much gentler on hair and reduces friction, which can help prevent breakage and frizz,” he added.

“A silk scarf or pillowcase is a great travel accessory to keep your hair soft.”

Post-flight care and light TLC can restore much-needed moisture to dehydrated hair.

“Rinse with cold water to help close the cuticles and retain moisture. Apply a nourishing hair mask or oil to replenish lost hydration;

“With a little preparation and the right products, you can keep your hair looking and feeling its best no matter where your travels take you.”
