THERE ARE many reasons why we can have saggy skin.

Aging is the most common, but smoking, extreme weight loss, pregnancy, sun damage, and poor diet all play a role.

Anything that helps the deterioration of collagen and elastin in the dermis – the middle layer of the skin – will lead to a reduction in the appearance and feeling of firmness.

If the skin has been stretched due to pregnancy or weight gain, it can be difficult to “bounce back,” especially if there is scar tissue beneath the surface.

Alex Lloyd asked Dr. Sana Sadiq, facial aesthetics doctor at Beyond Medispa, for tips on how to restore skin condition and tightness.

EAT THE RIGHT FATS: Sales of full-fat dairy products have increased – and that’s good news for your skin.

Opt for good-quality whole milk, grass-fed butter, and full-fat Greek yogurt to ensure your body has the components it needs.

Also, avoid cooking with rapeseed oil and opt for coconut oil to experience less inflammation.

EXERCISE IN WATER: While exercise is good for your physical and mental health, high-impact aerobic exercise like running can take its toll on your skin.

Choose water workouts to take care of your bones and muscles – the hangers on which your skin rests.

Also incorporate weight-bearing activities into your week, as this will slow age-related bone and muscle deterioration.

FEEL THE HEAT: Taking saunas regularly increases blood circulation, which means more nutrients reach the skin.

This increases cell renewal and rejuvenation throughout the body, especially if you opt for infrared.

If you don’t have access to a sauna, a regular hot bath can be effective.

MAKE YOUR SKIN MOVE: Massage and body brushing techniques help improve skin firmness.

They do this by moving the lymphatic system, draining toxins and also breaking down scar tissue that impedes blood flow.

Do this before your morning shower for maximum effect.
