Despite recovering many styles from the 90s and 90s, today’s young people have abandoned a makeup step that was an absolute necessity 20 years ago.

There are over 90 million Gen Z x Millennial posts on TikTok.

Among the hot topics of debate are the style of jeans, the length of socks and how to tuck a shirt into pants.

But now, teenagers are fighting over whether EYE-SHADOW is for “old ladies”.

Among younger TikTok users, the general consensus is that the humble smoky eye is a surefire way to reveal your age.

A 45-year-old mother took to the video-sharing platform to reveal her pre-teen’s contribution to the speech.

Jennifer Latch is an expert on all things related to beauty and aging gracefully – with her social media motto: “Aging is cool.”

Jennifer’s youngest daughter, a 12-year-old mother of three, told her that shade is a “Gen X and Millennial thing.”

“Also known as the old lady thing,” she said to the camera.

The video, which has since gone viral on TikTok, sparked new debate in the comments section.

“My 13-year-old son told me to stop using eyeshadow, so I guess it’s [an old lady thing]”, commented mother Jazmina Pashima.

“I have to agree with her,” said another social media user. “Shadow makes people look much older, especially if it’s intense.”

“I’m older Gen Z and that’s true,” joked a third. “Most girls now only wear it on special occasions.”

Fashion editor reveals 90s trends that should stay in the past

’90s and ’90s trends especially have become a hit with Gen Z — probably because they didn’t wear them the first time around. Here, Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale gives a rundown of some of the returning trends we wish hadn’t.

Disc belts

“A hit with celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Blake Lively, the belt itself didn’t do anything a belt was supposed to do – it was a mere fashion statement, not a piece to actually hold anything up.

“And it looks like it’s not just me who’s furious about his return, with many taking to TikTok to give their opinions, saying, ‘Oh no, the discus belt! I don’t think I have the energy for that a second time.’ – I understand you.”

Jelly shoes

“After decades of not being seen on the shelves, they have reappeared and this time they are not just for children.

“Coming in a variety of colorful patterns, you can find them all over the high street, in flat or high heel versions.

“Not only will you look very childish wearing these shoes, but people will also need to learn that they are not the most comfortable – blister pads will come in handy.”

Pedal pushers

“Knee-length cropped trousers were in fashion in the 1990s and 2000s, but this time the fashion pack style is all over them – with Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski wearing them recently.

“Original IT girls Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot helped make pants – also called Capri pants – look effortlessly cool and glamorous.

“Somehow, this time they don’t seem to be having the same effect.”

However, some TikTokers — even older Gen Zers — made a point of defending the shade and assured their fellow millennials that it’s not an “old lady thing.”

“I use it most days,” wrote one.

“I’m a Gen Z elder, born in 1997, I’m addicted to eyeshadow and I hate the clean look,” said another.

“As Gen Z, trends come and go with the wind,” assured a third.

“Minimalist and natural looks have been around for a while, but they will soon change.

“Just wear what you like, confidence rocks anything.”

Inspired by the grunge music scene, dark smoky eyes were a popular makeup choice in the nineties.

Shades of black and dark gray were commonly used to create a mottled, imperfect look, with matte finishes adding to the striking appearance.

Angelina Jolie was a fan of the grunge eyeshadow that extended to her eyebrows, with celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow favoring a blue look.

Pastel matte eyeshadows—especially white, silver, and light blue—also had a moment in the Nineties, paired with matching icy lips.

Fast forward to the ’90s, bright colors like neon greens, pinks, blues, and purples were popular thanks to the rise of pop stars like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

Shiny, metallic and shimmery shadows have also become common in evening looks.

But according to TikTokers, these trends are out of fashion.

Instead, a simple layer of bronzer is all you need for trendy lids, they claim.
