90s fashion has been taking over our streets for some time now – but it’s not just trendy clothes that are making a comeback.
From little butterfly clips on our heads to the so-called space buns loved by Britney Spears and the Spice Girls, the 90s and early 2000s were indeed an interesting and experimental time for hairstyles.
We styled our highlighted locks with loads of gel and thought a zigzag part was totally normal, while for volume we turned to a curling iron.
While the iconic era is making its debut on fashion runways, social media users are frantic over the return of a once-popular hairpiece that they used to rock as teenagers.
The beloved item is none other than the hair extension scrunchie, which many of us used as a simple hair tie in a ponytail.
Full of bouncy curls or tight curls, the scrunchie was every teenager and little fashionista’s dream, available in almost every color possible.
But fast forward to 2024, and it looks like we’ve finally figured out how to use this hair accessory to achieve a perfect, stylish look, as demonstrated by TikTok user Ashley Paige.
The Los Angeles-based blonde recently posted a simple tutorial on how to achieve the ultimate “messy bun” in just a few minutes — and it’s all thanks to the ’90s-inspired trend.
According to the lifestyle influencer (@ashley.paiige), first you need to separate the front section of your locks – in the videoshe did it near the ears.
Once done, she tied the back into a chic ponytail before grabbing “early 2000s hair extension scrunchies” and using them as “ponytail holders.”
The beauty then twisted the rest of the pony, wrapped it around the huge bun and secured it with a regular hair elastic to keep it in place.
To complete the elegant look, Ashley also rolled up the two front pieces before pulling them back and securing them with bobby pins.
”You get the most chic, easy and elegant messy bun.
“Try it — it’s my favorite hairstyle,” she said in the clip.
“Does anyone else remember these locks of hair?” Ashley, who has more than 425,000 followers, wondered in the caption.
Since being posted on the platform just two days ago, the video has already taken the internet by storm, earning the blue-eyed stunner an impressive 460,000 views.
Dozens of fellow fashion lovers rushed to comment, where they revealed the viral accessory was causing throwbacks.
The biggest beauty mistakes
Fabulous beauty editor Tara Ledden shared the do’s and don’ts when it comes to beauty.
“No matter how much time and money you spend on your beauty routine, if you don’t get the basics right, the rest will be wasted.
“There aren’t many non-negotiables, but these are the biggest beauty mistakes that sabotage your regimen.”
- Do not use SPF: Sun damage is the main cause of premature skin aging, so if you want to keep your skin looking plump and glowing, sun cream is vital.
- Using expired products: At best, they are ineffective and don’t deliver the results they promise; at worst, they cause irritation and infection. The shelf life of beauty products is different – for example, mascara usually lasts 3 to 6 months, while lipstick can last 9 to 18 months. Check the ‘POA’ symbol on the packaging (it looks like a bottle and will have a number within how many months it is safe once opened. If you don’t remember when you opened the product, throw it away and start over, marking the month and the year with permanent marker on the packaging.
- Not knowing your tones: If you are using makeup in the wrong tones, it will never look natural no matter how much you blend! An easy trick to find out if you have cool, warm or neutral undertones is to check the veins on your wrist – if they look blue you have cool undertones, if they look green you have warm undertones and if they are a mix you have neutral.
- Bypassing the thermal protector: It may seem unnecessary, but just like sun damage to your skin, excess heat is the most common cause of hair damage. So if you want shiny, healthy hair, or are trying to grow it longer, using a heat protection product is key.
- Not washing your face before going to bed: It’s that simple: if you don’t wash your face before going to sleep, everything that remains on your skin during the day stays there for longer, clogging the pores and drying out the surface. Any skin care applied on top won’t be effective with a layer of dirt underneath, and you’ll probably end up with dirty pillows too – yuck!
One person said: ”So much nostalgia for the extension cord!”
Another person was equally excited about returning the item, writing: ”These scrunchies are the best! Once you match your hair color, you’ll live with it!
”It’s so easy on vacation or in the summer, after a shower, to make a neat bun.”
A third thanked me for the easy tutorial, writing: “20 years later I know how to use this type of elastic.”
”This is so cute! I loved this when I was a teenager, this way it doesn’t seem obvious that it’s a wig,” commented another.
