A SKINCARE expert has revealed the common mistakes that can cause visible signs of ageing.
Lisa Kavanagh said an easily forgotten step in nighttime beauty routines can trigger the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Kavanagh is the founder of De-Lux sphagnuma UK-based skincare brand specializing in products containing peat.
She said there is a lot of misinformation online about anti-aging that can make skin worse.
“While having wrinkles and fine lines is natural as we begin to age, following the wrong types of skin care will cause accelerated aging and skin damage,” she said.
Kavanagh revealed seven skincare mistakes to avoid for a youthful appearance.
Skip serums
She said it is “essential” to regularly use a cream or serum on the skin around your eyes.
Because the area is thinner than most other parts of the body, “wrinkles, bags and sagging” will appear without proper care.
LAYERED PRODUCTS
Kavanagh said the “rule of three” should be followed in skin care, as using too many products at the same time can have adverse effects.
Among them is chronic inflammation, which is a “significant trigger” of skin aging.

“This can result in the breakdown of collagen and elastin, which can cause wrinkles and sagging,” she said.
SLEEPING IN MAKEUP
Kavanagh said it’s common to accidentally forget to remove your makeup at night.
However, sleeping using products such as mascara or concealer can cause damage to the skin.
“Leaving it on can lead to accelerated aging as it breaks down collagen and results in fine lines and wrinkles,” she said.
LACK OF MOISTURIZER
Kavanagh revealed that there is one area of the body that is often overlooked when applying skincare products.
“Many understand the importance of moisturizing their face, but seem to forget how essential it is to apply it to their neck,” she said.
Using very hot water can make your skin extremely dry, which can damage the skin barrier and cause wrinkles and lines.

“Lack of moisture can result in ‘neck rings’ that can cause sagging and horizontal lines.”
EXCESSIVELY EXFOLIANT
Kavanagh said skin should only be exfoliated three times a week.
“It’s healthy to exfoliate your skin, but doing it too often can destroy the skin barrier, which can cause dryness and irritation, leading to accelerated aging,” she said.
DO NOT USE SUNSCREEN
Kavanagh warned that it is “vital” to use SPF when leaving the house, especially on your face and neck.
“Sun exposure can significantly age the skin and produce dark spots, which can cause premature aging,” she said.
WASHING WITH HOT WATER
Kavanagh revealed that skin can become “extremely dry” and damaged by using “very hot water” when washing your face.
She said this would cause fine lines and wrinkles to appear.
“Be sure to only use hot water occasionally to help open your pores; otherwise, use warm water for daily cleanings,” she said.
