Dr. Jennifer Tsai, an optometrist, emphasized the importance of investing in eye-safe beauty and health cosmetics.

“Eye-safe cosmetics are formulated specifically for the eyes and rigorously tested to ensure they are gentle and non-irritating,” she explained.

“Our eyes are particularly sensitive to allergens, and eye-safe cosmetics are formulated with ingredients that are less likely to cause sensitivity or allergic reactions.”

For those who want to speed up their eyelash growth with serums and treatments, Tsai advised them to pay attention to the basics first.

“It all starts with protecting your lashes and eyebrows from damage. Avoid rubbing your eyes and be careful when using eyelash curlers to prevent them from breaking,” she said.

“Avoid waterproof mascara, which can be difficult to remove, and use a gentle micellar-based makeup remover (such as Lumify Eye Illumination Micellar Cleansing Water) to avoid pulling your eyelashes.”

Makeup fans, the expert said, should consider the ease of removal when it comes to mascara.

“Using waterproof mascara regularly can cause lash breakage due to the harsh ingredients and difficulty removing,” she said.

Cutting eyelashes to promote growth, she added, was a common myth.

“Trimming your eyelashes does not directly promote eyelash or eyebrow growth and can actually cause eye irritation due to blunt ends,” she said.

When she’s shopping for eyelash treatments, she’s intentional about avoiding ingredients that are harmful to her eyes.

“Start by reading product labels and choose cosmetics specifically labeled as safe for use around the eyes,” she said.

“You’d be surprised to see what is used in cosmetic products! Start with products labeled as safe for sensitive eyes, such as Lumify Eye Illuminations Nourishing Serum for Eyelashes and Eyebrows.

Tsai explained that she avoids growth serums that contain prostaglandins and instead looks for those formulated with peptides, hyaluronic acid, and biotin.

Its long list of red flag ingredients includes parabens, sulfates, formaldehyde, synthetic fragrances, and alcohol.

“These ingredients can irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions or other adverse effects,” she explained.

“Prostaglandin analogues are a class of medications commonly used to treat glaucoma and also to promote eyelash growth; however, long-term use may lead to a potential side effect of loss of orbital fat or the appearance of sunken eyes,” she added.

“It is important to note that not everyone using prostaglandin analogues will experience orbital fat loss and the degree of fat loss may vary between individuals.

“Factors such as duration of use, the specific medication used and individual predispositions can influence the likelihood and severity of this side effect.”

When testing a new eyelash serum or eye cream, the expert recommended starting slowly and doing patch tests before increasing application frequency.

Above all, she stressed that great lashes and great results take time.

“Be patient! Eyelash and eyebrow serums typically take time to show results, with noticeable improvements often occurring after several weeks of consistent use,” said Tsai.

“Be patient and consistent with your application routine and avoid expecting instant results.”

She explained that the serum took a while to take effect, with thicker lashes and fuller brows in 2 to 4 weeks.
