And when you’re the bride, you have even more things on your mind, like making sure your dress fits perfectly and your hair stays in place.

One thing that brides always worry about is keeping their makeup up to date – after all, it needs to last all day and you want it to look beautiful in the photos.

And since a wedding already costs a fortune, many people resent shelling out for their makeup to be done professionally.

Doing your own makeup on the big day could be the way to go – thanks to an expert who has shared her top tips on how to make it look like it was done by a professional.

Makeup artist Wayne Goss revealed her top five tricks that will not only give you an unforgettable look but also keep costs down.

Goss, who runs his own cosmetics websiteHe often shares his tips with his four million followers on YouTube.

He said: “It can be a challenge deciding between getting a professional MUA or doing your own makeup on your big day.

“However, with the right tips, DIY can be the best way to look your best while keeping costs low.”

Keep your makeup as natural as possible

According to Goss, less is more in wedding makeup.

He explains: “If you want to achieve a natural yet elegant look for wedding photos, remember to keep your makeup as natural as possible.

I’m a makeup artist and brides drive me crazy with these annoying comments – I hear this at every wedding

“The less makeup you apply, the more beautiful you will look.

“If you are looking for a long-lasting product suggestion, my recommendation would be Doublewear by Estee Launder.

“You don’t need much and it really will last all day.”

Make sure you use the right tone

Making sure you use the right color is key — and it prevents you from having horrible makeup lines.

Knowing the type of skin you have is important because the right makeup for your skin will make it look perfect.

Goss says: “Try to tailor your makeup rather than your skin tone. Make sure you use the right shade that suits your skin type.

“For example, if your skin is oily, you may need a powder foundation.

“But if you have dry skin, then the cream is probably better suited for your skin.”

Powder is the key to touch-ups

You may be tempted to reapply and review your makeup throughout the day to keep it looking fresh.

But according to experts, all you need for the entire day is a little powder.

They suggest: “If you look at someone from the front, their face should look dull.

“If you turn it to the side, that’s when the highlight hits the top of the cheekbone and brow bone, which is really beautifully photographed.

“Paying attention to the face being matte is essential.

“While we all love glowing skin, matte skin photographs much more beautifully from the front.

“And since you’re going to be looking at this forever, you want your skin to look its best and that’s why it needs to be sprayed.”

Why You Should Never Wear White to a Wedding

JOSIE Griffiths, deputy editor of Fabulous, who is getting married this year, shared her views on wearing white to a wedding…

Josie Griffiths said: I tend to consider myself low maintenance from a fashion and beauty perspective.

I can leave the house in 20 minutes in the morning, I usually do my mascara on the bus or subway, and I spend my work days at home in my gym gear.

But when it comes to my wedding this summer, everything has gone out the window.

Professional hair and makeup is scheduled for 8am, I’ve changed into all my wedding dress, bought designer shoes, and even bought a second dress for the evening.

So when I think about someone wearing a white dress on my big day, yes, I think I would be very angry.

The idea of not wearing a white dress goes back to not wanting to ‘outshine the bride’.

Which, to be fair, is unlikely. Not only did she spend a small fortune on the day’s look, but she’s also one of only two people in attendance who knows (and hopefully likes) all of the guests.

So the main risk you run is looking really silly – and being gossiped about by strangers.

A wedding guest I met in October 2022 is still etched in my mind. I still don’t know which was worse: the fact that she was so drunk that she was bumping into people on the dance floor, or her decision to wear a white dress, which was arguably made better by the glass of red wine she drank drunk. She went down alone.

I know weddings are expensive for everyone and it’s fair if you don’t want to buy a whole new outfit – I’m all for repurposing what’s already in your wardrobe.

Just avoid the white dress for the bride’s sake – and yours.

Apply more at night

Your wedding setting can change throughout the day – from the ceremony to taking photos outdoors and then the reception indoors in the evening as it gets dark.

Therefore, your makeup will likely need to be adjusted slightly throughout the day to match.

Goss advises: “If you want to make sure your makeup complements different lighting conditions, from indoor ceremonies to outdoor receptions, natural makeup will look good in any lighting.

“However, if you want to apply a little more, you can apply more makeup at night without going overboard.

“More makeup will photograph more beautifully in darker lighting conditions, but you still want to keep it as natural as possible.”

Use milk of magnesia

Lastly, Goss explains that a product can stop you from looking oily-faced on your wedding day.

He says: “Using an extremely thin layer of milk of magnesia on the morning of your wedding will help prevent your face from looking oily on your wedding day, or even combat tears if the day gets too emotional.

“Putting some under your makeup will ensure it lasts all day as it will help absorb oil from your face.

“However, you don’t want to use this all the time—only at very special events like your wedding, as it can dry out your skin when used in excess.”

You can buy a bottle of Milk of Magnesia for just £5.99 at Savers.
