Somji is a hair restoration surgeon and medical director of the UK-based aesthetics clinic. Dr. Medispa.

Speaking to The US Sun, he shared the most underrated methods for promoting hair growth.

VALUABLE MINUTES

Somji said it’s important to speak to a healthcare professional first to rule out underlying medical conditions that could compromise hair growth.

“There are a number of reversible causes of hair loss that you may need blood tests for, such as B12, folic acid, vitamin D deficiency and iron deficiency,” he said.

“Stress, lifestyle, poor nutritional intake, poor sleep and high cortisol levels can also affect hair growth.”

He revealed that a relaxing daily habit can have a huge impact on the health of your locks.

“I think one of the most underrated tips is to massage your scalp daily,” he said.

“This improves circulation and stimulates blood flow and stimulates hair follicles.

“The scalp has a very good regenerative capacity, so you can regenerate it by massaging it daily for around 10 minutes, even if it is in the shower while washing your hair or with some oil.”

POWERFUL PRODUCTS

Somji advised against using products that contain chemicals such as sulfates, parabens, silicones and formaldehyde as they can trigger shedding.

He said permanent hair loss can also be caused by the use of strong waxes and gels that “starve” and cause tractional alopecia.

“In pharmacies you can find 2% minoxidil for women and 5% minoxidil for men, it is a topical solution that stimulates hair growth,” he said.

“There are also hair and scalp products that can help, such as products containing keratin, which can help coat the hair.

“Hair tonics can also help with hair loss.”

FANTASTIC TREATMENTS

Somji said it is possible to improve scalp health and reduce hair loss with treatments such as Keravive and microneedling.

However, it’s important to consider the impact that styling habits like heat tools, dyeing, and bleaching will have when trying to grow out your locks.

One of the biggest causes of tractional alopecia that leads to hair transplants in patients who come to my clinic is the use of hair extensions.

“Using heat when styling hair is extremely harmful,” he said.

“They damage the outer cortex of the hair shaft and the constant pulling can also lead to tractional alopecia.”

He said there are new low-intensity laser combs that help stimulate microcirculation in the scalp and help with a variety of hair conditions.

“One of the biggest causes of tractional alopecia that leads to hair transplants in patients who come to my clinic is the use of hair extensions,” he said.

“They add weight to the hair and cause tractional alopecia and if you have the genes for female pattern hair loss, this can accelerate symptoms.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Dr. Somji said that genetics will account for up to 60-70% of the appearance of your hair.

In addition to genetics, he said that blood tests are crucial to identify any nutritional deficiencies that could harm hair health.

A deficit can be treated with “good quality multivitamins” and dietary changes.

“You want to ensure you eat a diet that contains all the necessary vitamins and minerals,” he said.

“Vitamin B12, folate, iron supplements, vitamin D supplements, are essential, as are omega-3 antacids in your diet.”
