Budget-friendly makeup and skincare is on pretty much everyone’s radar.

With some designer cosmetics costing hundreds or even thousands, many are turning to dupes in search of cheaper alternatives.

Rohan Widdison is the CEO of New Laboratories in Victoria, Australia.

He talked to The US Sun about what makes a decent jerk in the beauty world.

Widdison also pointed out warning signs to look out for before making a purchase.

He shared some budget-friendly beauty brands he recommends, even though he doesn’t personally work with them.

BEING DECEIVED

Widdison explained why dupes will remain popular in the cosmetics world.

“Dumbs will always have a place in the market because fundamentally consumers love the idea of getting a luxury experience without the high price tag,” he told The US Sun.

“Dupes are affordable, ideally similar in quality and appearance to high-end products, and offer consumers the opportunity to try new trends without spending a lot of money.

“If consumers discover that the product doesn’t suit them, they won’t be left broke compared to shelling out a small fortune for popular luxury products.”

With some skincare lines like La Mer having impressive costs, Widdison isn’t far off.

However, he added that a cheaper price does not always result in a winning product.

I have tons of great perfumes from a little-known brand – a ‘fancy’ perfume is indistinguishable from Tom Ford

“The dupes who just don’t work are the biggest reason for failure,” he said.

“Just because consumers want to spend less money doesn’t mean they don’t have expectations of value and performance.

He added that while dupes have “more leeway” when it comes to performance, meeting customer standards is key.

DON’T BE FOOLED

Widdison talked about specific red flags to look out for when shopping for beauty products.

According to him, choosing the wrong one can be dangerous.

“Appearances matter when it comes to spotting an idiot. Poor quality packaging is the first telltale sign of inferior product quality,” he said.

“Make sure jerkies are well packaged, sealed, and have all the important information, like ingredient list and instructions for use, written in clear, easy-to-understand language.

“Check that the ingredients do not contain ingredients that are harmful or may cause irritation.”

“Be careful if a product is priced too low, as this could mean its quality is compromised.”

He gave a tip on how to make sure a jerk meets the customer’s needs.

“Check the ingredients and compare to the original product,” he said.

“User reviews are very helpful for this, especially for makeup forum communities and makeup artist reviews.

“Good dabs should have decent staying power, not have an unpleasant smell, be pigmented, easy to apply, and packaged well.”

However, some deals may be too good to be true, according to Widdison.

“Be careful if a product is priced too low as this could mean its quality is compromised,” he said.

WHY DUPES WORK

Widdison shared his insights into why idiots are so popular.

“Dupes make it easy to try beauty trends because they are affordable and widely accessible to consumers,” he said.

“Eagle-eyed beauty lovers are always on the lookout for something good, which means brands are responding by launching new products and expanding popular lines faster than luxury brands.”

Widdison listed some of her favorite cosmetics.

“Elf has an incredible reputation for low prices and high quality. Many of their products go viral on social media,” he said.

“Their products like Dior Lip Oil, Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter and Rare Beauty Blush are praised by makeup artists as being just as good, if not better, than the originals.

“Too Faced’s cult Better Than Sex Mascara also faces competition from Maybelline’s The Falsies Lash Life Volumizing Mascara for good reason.

“Nars’ Orgasm blush has a few imitators, including L’Oreal’s Blush Please collection and Maybelline’s Fit Me True to Tone blush in Rose.”

He also offered advice for skincare shoppers looking for a deal.

“When it comes to skin care, The Ordinary is known for its effective and reasonably priced range,” he said.

“Their 100% cold-pressed virgin marula oil is a great substitute for Drunk Elephant’s Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil.

“Cosmeceutical brand Skinstitut has a much cheaper version of Emma Lewisham’s popular Skin Reset Serum, which is the 10% Niacinamide Power Serum.”
