FROM Botox and facials to retinols and resurfacing toners, there are countless anti-aging products.
But according to a wrinkle-free woman, the secret to truly glowing skin and banishing fine lines is hidden in the produce section at Tesco.
Beauty content creator Selina Da Silva rubs a raw spice into clean skin for a flawless complexion.
That spice is ginger.
Selina guaranteed that she didn’t take a drop of Botox to achieve a wrinkle-free face.
Instead, she cuts a piece of ginger in half and slides the raw insides over her face regularly — and says it has anti-aging benefits.
On Instagram, it claimed the 50p beauty hack reduces acne scars, oily skin, inflammation AND the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
She added that it “glows and brightens the skin” for a glazed-like-a-doughnut complexion.
“Such a good natural trick for your skin,” Selina wrote in the caption of her now-viral post.
Let the ginger juice sit on your skin for five minutes before washing – but if you feel any stinging or discomfort, rinse immediately.
What is the science behind this?
Ginger contains antioxidants, mainly gingerol.
Antioxidants are essential in the fight against aging because they help neutralize free radicals.
Free radicals are external influences – such as pollution – that cause damage to cells.
This leads to visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin.
And, as Selina noted, ginger has anti-inflammatory properties.
Inflammation is a major contributor to facial aging because it weakens the skin’s structure, resulting in the breakdown of collagen and elastin.
What is collagen?
- Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and provides strength and structure to the skin and muscles
- Plays a significant role in maintaining skin elasticity and hydration
- As we age, collagen production decreases, causing wrinkles, sagging and decreased skin firmness.
- Collagen production begins to decline between the ages of 20 and 30. At 40, it fell drastically
It’s important to note that while collagen-based skin products can offer benefits, their effectiveness can vary greatly.
Some experts suggest that topical collagen application may have limited effectiveness compared to other skincare ingredients that stimulate collagen production in the skin.
By reducing inflammation, ginger helps maintain skin firmness and prevents the appearance of sagging.
Social media reacts
However, not everyone is convinced by the spicy hack.
Some beauty fans claim that rubbing raw ginger on the cells can cause burning, redness and, in the worst case, burns to the skin.
“Once I rubbed ginger on my face and it burned like my face was burning,” warned Joana Garcia in Selina’s video.
“That’s nonsense,” Haydon Hughrs added. “Guys, you don’t have to do this to have great skin.”
Although ginger is a natural ingredient, it is potent.
It can cause reactions on different skin types, especially sensitive skin, which is why you should do a patch test before applying ginger to your face.
Make sure to rinse your face with water after applying ginger as well.
And as with any skincare routine, balance is key – overuse can cause irritation.
