There are thousands of products available (some costing hundreds of pounds) that promise to make the locks of our dreams come true.

But according to one hairdresser, the secret to speeding up hair growth lies in a 2p bath.

Abbey Yung is an expert on all things scalp and hair health, so we can trust her judgment.

She tested the bargaining method for a month and showed how much her hair grew.

The trick is to apply rice water to your scalp and hair once a week.

“I’ve officially been using rice water for a month now,” she shared in a TikTok update.

“It’s definitely grown a little more.

“And besides the growth, I feel like I’ve seen so many other benefits – like my hair is shinier and softer.

“Overall, it feels healthier and more manageable.

“So this is definitely a win for me and something I will continue to do in my weekly hair washing routine.”

My hair is so shiny you can see your reflection in it – all thanks to an 84p product that lasts up to 10 washes

Rice water has a rich history, with women in countries like China and Japan using it to maintain long, luscious hair.

It is rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids – including inositol, which is a carbohydrate that can repair and protect hair.

Additionally, inositol remains in the hair even after rinsing, providing continued protection.

Rice water also contains vitamins B, C and E, which are essential for hair health.

The 4 phases of the hair growth cycle

Hair experts at Philip Kingsley have shared the four stages of the hair growth cycle: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen.

Anagen Phase: Also known as the ‘Growth Phase’ or ‘Active Phase’, this is when the hair root cells divide more quickly, forming more new hair.

During the anagen phase, hair grows about half an inch per month [about six inches a year]and faster in summer than in winter.

This phase of the hair growth cycle lasts an average of three to five years.

Catagen Phase: After the Anagen Phase, your hair cycle enters a short transition phase known as the Catagen Phase, which signals the end of active hair growth and cuts off individual strands from the blood supply and cells that produce new hair.

Approximately three percent of all hair is in this stage at any given time and it lasts for about 10 days.

Telogen Phase: The third stage of the natural hair growth cycle is the Telogen Phase, a resting period in which strands remain in the follicles but are not actively growing.

An estimated 10 to 15 percent of your hair is in the telogen phase at any given time.

The Telogen Phase lasts about three months or 100 days.

Exogenous Phase: The final phase of the Hair Growth Cycle, when individual hairs are released from their follicles and fall out.

Now the whole process starts again.

These nutrients work together to strengthen the hair shaft, reduce hair breakage, and promote healthy hair growth when applied to the scalp.

How to Create Your Own Rice Water

Creating your own rice water at home is simple and only requires some white rice and water.

Start by rinsing the rice to remove any dirt or impurities, then soak it in clean water for 30 minutes to an hour, stirring occasionally.

After soaking, strain the water into a clean bowl or jar and discard the rice.

For additional benefits, leave the rice water at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours to ferment.

Once prepared or fermented, it must be stored in the refrigerator and used within a week.

How to use it

To make the most of rice water, Abbey recommended wetting your hair once a week.

After washing, pour rice water over your hair to coat your scalp and strands, then massage your scalp for five minutes to promote blood flow.

For extra nourishment, you can leave it in your hair for 30 minutes.

Rinse the rice water out with cold water and apply conditioner as you normally would.

Aim to use the 2p hack once a week, as excessive use can lead to protein overload, leaving your hair stiff or dry.
