In your viral videoTikTok user Ellen (@askellenbeauty) demonstrated a simple way to check if you have a pink or yellow complexion.

She explained that the answer is literally within reach.

The beauty expert shared that there are telltale signs on your body that will instantly reveal your base color.

“My palms are pink, see that pink hue there, and the backs of my hands are yellow,” Ellen said as she showed her hands to the audience.

“See when I put the pink next to the yellow, the yellow almost looks half green.”

She explained that anyone with pink skin will have pink or red tones everywhere.

This includes your chest, face, and ears.

For those still unsure, Ellen recommended adding a swatch of pink and yellow foundation to your chin or chest.

One of the foundations will disappear as it blends into your skin, revealing your base color.

She showed her followers how a yellow foundation looked “almost invisible” on her skin once it dried.

Ellen noted that if she had tested the product on her fingertip, it would look wrong on her skin.

She added that this is why it’s important to compare various parts of your body to the skin on your face when testing foundation.

TikTok users shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments section.

“YES, it really helped. I’m pink, but I was told not to use pink foundation because it would make me look too red in the face,” said one viewer.

“I’m not the one who’s been struggling with this concept for YEARS just to have the magic makeup artist explain it simply and quickly,” wrote another impressed follower.

The biggest beauty mistakes

Fabulous beauty editor Tara Ledden shared the do’s and don’ts when it comes to beauty.

“No matter how much time and money you spend on your beauty routine, if you don’t get the basics right, the rest will be wasted.

“There aren’t many non-negotiables, but these are the biggest beauty mistakes that sabotage your regimen.”

  • Do not use SPF: Sun damage is the main cause of premature skin aging, so if you want to keep your skin looking plump and glowing, sun cream is vital.
  • Using Expired Products: At best, they are ineffective and don’t deliver the results they promise; at worst, they cause irritation and infection. The shelf life of beauty products is different – for example, mascara usually lasts 3 to 6 months, while lipstick can last 9 to 18 months. Check the ‘POA’ symbol on the packaging (it looks like a bottle and will have a number within how many months it is safe once opened. If you don’t remember when you opened the product, throw it away and start over, marking the month and the year with permanent marker on the packaging.
  • Not knowing your tones: If you are using makeup in the wrong tones, it will never look natural no matter how much you blend! An easy trick to find out if you have cool, warm or neutral undertones is to check the veins on your wrist – if they look blue you have cool undertones, if they look green you have warm undertones and if they are a mix you have neutral.
  • Bypassing the thermal protector: It may seem unnecessary, but just like sun damage to your skin, excess heat is the most common cause of hair damage. So if you want shiny, healthy hair, or are trying to grow it longer, using a heat protection product is key.
  • Not washing your face before going to bed: It’s that simple: if you don’t wash your face before going to sleep, everything that remains on your skin during the day stays there for longer, clogging the pores and drying out the surface. Any skin care applied on top won’t be effective with a layer of dirt underneath, and you’ll probably end up with dirty pillows too – yuck!

“I can’t wait to test the nine bottles I have,” joked a third commenter.

“I’m very pale but still have a yellowish base, it’s really hard to find foundations that aren’t pinkish,” another person shared.

“My God, this is the simplest explanation ever!!! Thank you,” commented one viewer.

“Oh my god this really helped!! You are the FIRST to explain it so I understand!!! Thank you,” said another follower.

“Definitely helps!!!!! I wish there were more resources for people to discover their undertone. I just realized I’m yellow at 38!” wrote one TikTok user.
