The only thing you think is helping you turn back time may be making you look years older.

That’s right, there are certain makeup mistakes that can highlight wrinkles, make your eyes droopy and make your face saggy.

Makeup artist Alison Gay, known as alisongaymakeup on social media, he explained the common mistakes that people make all the time when applying their daily use products.

The first mistake is usually too much concealer, explained the beauty professional.

“If you want to go overboard with concealer, be prepared for a lot of wrinkled, wrinkled skin,” she said.

The problem is that “overloading” the concealer will leave the under eyes dry, she added.

“Your eye bags will look absolutely horrible and worse than they were, not to mention you will look 100 years old,” Alison continued.

So instead of piling on the product, remember that a little goes a long way when it comes to concealer.

Alison recommended using a small amount just on the inner and outer corner of each eye, making sure to blend it completely with a soft brush.

But if you want to go the extra mile, Alison suggested adding a spritz of setting spray to a sponge and blending it in further.

I bought a HUGE makeup mystery box at auction worth £1,000!!

“This will help hold it in place and provide the moisture you so desperately need,” she explained.

Contour placement is also important to get right – and you should never apply a random stipe under the cheek.

This will not only look messy but will also “drag your face down”.

The product placement should be much higher than most people imagine, and you should then create a V-shape towards your temple, before carefully blending everything together.

Most importantly, when blending, make sure it never goes past the tip of your brow, the beauty pro noted.

And finally, when it comes to perfect blush placement, smiling and applying color to your cheekbones is a big no-no.

Sure, it may look good while you apply it, but as soon as you stop smiling, the placement will be much less than expected.

When you relax your face, Alison explained that your cheeks sag and this can make them look “saggy.”

To do it like a pro and avoid looking older, she said you need to place your finger on your cheekbone and only apply the product to the area above the line.

And once again, less is more when it comes to blush.

Since publishing the helpful clip, Alison’s tips have gone viral online, with hundreds of people thanking her for her easy-to-follow advice.

One said: “Doing my concealer as you instructed was a game changer for me.”

A second agreed: “I’m 60 years old and I really appreciate these tips, especially the concealer.”

“I completely agree with the concealer, I stopped and did as you described now,” said another.

“It’s so good to see the advice in a real face! This is actually very useful,” commented another person.

The biggest beauty mistakes

Fabulous beauty editor Tara Ledden shared the do’s and don’ts when it comes to beauty.

“No matter how much time and money you spend on your beauty routine, if you don’t get the basics right, the rest will be wasted.

“There aren’t many non-negotiables, but these are the biggest beauty mistakes that sabotage your regimen.”

  • Do not use SPF: Sun damage is the main cause of premature skin aging, so if you want to keep your skin looking plump and glowing, sun cream is vital.
  • Using Expired Products: At best, they are ineffective and don’t deliver the results they promise; at worst, they cause irritation and infection. The shelf life of beauty products is different – for example, mascara usually lasts 3 to 6 months, while lipstick can last 9 to 18 months. Check the ‘POA’ symbol on the packaging (it looks like a bottle and will have a number within how many months it is safe once opened. If you don’t remember when you opened the product, throw it away and start over, marking the month and the year with permanent marker on the packaging.
  • Not knowing your tones: If you are using makeup in the wrong tones, it will never look natural no matter how much you blend! An easy trick to find out if you have cool, warm or neutral undertones is to check the veins on your wrist – if they look blue you have cool undertones, if they look green you have warm undertones and if they are a mix you have neutral.
  • Bypassing the thermal protector: It may seem unnecessary, but just like sun damage to your skin, excess heat is the most common cause of hair damage. So if you want shiny, healthy hair, or are trying to grow it longer, using a heat protection product is key.
  • Not washing your face before going to bed: It’s that simple: if you don’t wash your face before going to sleep, everything that remains on your skin during the day stays there for longer, clogging the pores and drying out the surface. Any skin care applied on top won’t be effective with a layer of dirt underneath, and you’ll probably end up with dirty pillows too – yuck!
