A mother has sparked an online debate after revealing her son wants to change his name.

She revealed she was torn between letting her almost seven-year-old son change his name, despite him being severely bullied at school.

She explained how she adopted her son three years ago and didn’t want to change his name because his biological mother gave it to him.

“We did a lot of research and although the name seemed really silly, it felt wrong to take his name away,” the mother explained.

“His name is the name of a piece of furniture. For the purposes of the question, I will use the first name Mesa,” she told Reddit.

“We actually decided to keep his full name, but we just rearranged things to include our last names. His full name was Table Michael Harrison.”

His mother went on to say that he had been bullied because of his name at school and started using the name Harrison instead.

But he still sees it on forms and is occasionally called by his first name by substitute teachers, upsetting him.

“He gets upset whenever he sees his first name written on forms. He gets upset when he has a replacement and she calls him Mesa.

“He really doesn’t like his first name and said it makes him think bad things,” she continued.

On his next birthday, her son asked for no gifts other than to change his legal name.

“He wants to get rid of Table completely and become Harrison Michael Smith-Jones. Would you let your son do that?” she asked Reddit Users.

People were quick to comment on the thread and many revealed that they would let him change his name if things were getting that bad.

One person wrote: “He can always change and come back later. I’ve never heard of a child wanting to change their name as a birthday present.

Another commented: “I would say in 99% of situations the child is too young to make that decision. I would also say this is the 1%.”

“I would consider it. The name is causing him distress and he already uses another name. Plus he still has the connection to his birth family with his middle names if that becomes important to him in the future,” wrote one third.

The struggle to choose a baby name

CHLOE Morgan, senior writer at Fabulous, revealed her dilemma when choosing a name for her baby…

At 35 weeks pregnant, by far the trickiest part of pregnancy for me over the last few months (minus the insomnia and countless nighttime breaks!) has been trying to decide on the baby’s name.

The dilemmas are endless…

My partner and I had a private exam to find out the sex as early as possible – partly because we thought it would make naming babies so much easier because we would only have to create a list of names for one gender instead of two.

How wrong we were…

I was absolutely thrilled to learn I was expecting the girl I’d already dreamed of, but being one of the last friends to get pregnant, I’ve had countless conversations over the years with excited friends discussing their top baby names. …something I wish I could go back in time and not hear.

With every friend mentioning at least 10 possible nicknames, I can’t help but feel that several are now off-limits, even though I know it’s something none of them would mind in the slightest – it’s a total turn-off for me!

The debate comes up again and again on social media forums – can you choose the same name that was a “potential” for a friend’s baby?

It’s a very divisive subject and opinions are always mixed… and I don’t want to be THAT person.

While some will argue that there are thousands of other names to choose from, others will say that you need to choose YOUR favorite… after all, there is no guarantee that this person will have another child.

Then there’s also the matter of finding a name you love… only to look it up online and read one negative review among hundreds of positive ones that you just can’t get rid of.

I made this same mistake when I fell in love with a certain name (I won’t reveal it because I don’t want to ruin it for others!)…only to have someone point out that it is constantly autocorrected on a phone to something quite rude.

So, we went back to the drawing board.

There are only five weeks left and it looks like our little one will be known as ‘baby gal’ for a while longer!

Meanwhile, a fourth said: “I would let him do it. It’s not like he wants to change his name to Spider-Man, if he’s already called Harrison, it’ll make life easier for that to be his cool name. name only gets harder as you get older.”

“I would let him change. It seems like everyone is on the same page, I don’t see any harm. If he regrets it later in life, he can always take it back,” said a fifth.

Someone else added: “Yes, go ahead! I read his title and thought “oh God, no. He’s only 6.” But… in this situation, yes. I could.”
