WHEN it comes to choosing a baby’s name – many people forget to think about the nicknames they might be given as they get older.

And a mother who has already registered her daughter’s name revealed she did exactly that – and now regrets it.

On social media, the mother revealed that she gave birth to her daughter a week ago and found the perfect name for her, Sigrid.

However, she was now regretting the name due to the nickname used with the nickname ‘Siggy’ – which she thinks sounds similar to the slang term for cigarette – ‘ciggy’.

Venting on Reddit, the now remorseful mother shared how, after much back and forth with her husband over names, they arrived at Sigrid.

She explained: “My daughter is one week old and her name is Sigrid. My husband and I had a hard time choosing a name.

“We both had a favorite that the other didn’t like – mine was Ottilie and her Aubrey.

Now I’m worried she’ll be bullied because she looks like a cigarette

“Etta was our intended name, but he quickly dropped it after birth. He mentioned Sigrid and I thought I liked it and agreed.

“Now I’m worried she’ll be bullied because she looks like a cigarette.

“My husband loves the nickname Ziggy or Siggy. Sisi could work (pronounced Ceecee?) Also, we are not Scandinavian, although we both look that way and my husband has Danish heritage a few generations ago.”

The mother was now having second thoughts and even had another nickname that she was ready to change to from Sigrid.

She admitted that she is in love with the name Beatrix and her husband “may be willing” to change their daughter’s name to avoid any potential bullying she may face as she gets older.

Despite the mother’s concerns – many people took to the comments on the Reddit post saying that Sigrid was a great name and that she was overthinking it.

One person wrote: “Sigrid doesn’t look like a cigarette unless you’ve gone crazy worrying about it.

Another commented: “I think it’s a really cool name. I wouldn’t worry if she was provoked. I didn’t even remotely make that connection or any other bad connection. I don’t think the kids will.”

“I met a Sigrid and no one ever made that joke about her,” wrote a third.

Meanwhile, a fourth said: “I live in the UK and we definitely say ciggy in the same way as siggy, short for Sigrid. I love it, but something would stop me from using it.”

“I really love Sigrid,” said a fifth.

Someone else added: “You’re only a week postpartum. It’s natural to feel a little panicked in general. Take time to calm down before you think about changing something as big as her name. See if you start to calm down and feel become more familiar.”
