A mother has spoken of her shock after the normal name she called her daughter turned into a nightmare – with people constantly assuming it was fake.

Mairi Rice and her partner Peter Swift – both 43 – named their daughter two years before a certain singer achieved global stardom.

Taylor Swift’s fame instantly transformed little Taylor’s life in Newarthill, Lanarkshire.

Now 19, the Scottish teenager is plagued by claims she is a fake – despite being born before the American singing idol’s success.

Her mother said, “Normally, most of us only need documentation for a few things. But for Taylor, she needs it for absolutely everything. Nobody believes her.

“The last holiday we went on, we were approaching the gate when we heard the flight attendants saying, ‘We can’t believe her name is Taylor Swift.’

“And when it comes to passport checks, officials are skeptical. They tell her, ‘What’s her name?’ And they will look again.”

Taylor is also banned from using her own name on social media, while her mega-popular namesake has 282 million followers on Instagram.

Mairi added: “When we put her name on Facebook they said, ‘You’re trying to copy her name.’ We sent documents to them, but they still said she was copying a celebrity’s name.”

But the mother still believes that the name was given to her daughter for a reason.

She said: “She’s very outgoing, very cheerful. The name Taylor Swift is not a coincidence. Something led to this. It’s in her character.

“I’m very proud that my daughter’s name is Taylor Swift. If she’s not with me, I’ll call her and say, ‘Can you just tell them her name?'”

And Taylor herself didn’t realize she shared the name of a global celebrity until she was 12.

It followed the release of Swift’s 2014 album 1989 – named after the year she was born – and the hit Shake It Off.

Since then, she has struggled to get a job because employers do not believe her name is genuine.

Self-confessed Swifty said: “I went through hell because of my name.

“I like it – it’s quite unique. But sometimes there can be embarrassing sides to it.”

Despite the disadvantages, Taylor’s name causes controversy when she goes out at night.

She added: “Whenever I go to the pub, no one believes my age or my name because I look so young and my name is also Taylor Swift.

“But I will enter with my identity. And then everyone’s talking about my name saying, ‘Taylor Swift is at the pub.’ I need to show my passport to everyone.”
