A mum has opened up about how she cleans her daughter’s room for her – and it has sparked a debate online.
Gemma, from Greater Manchester, uploaded a video defending her help to her teenage son “as a favour”.

In a clip about her @themarklandhome account, Gemma shared how she received backlash after telling followers she cleaned her room.
She said: “My daughter is an ungrateful and spoiled child and I am the worst mother in the world, according to TikTok.
“Last week I posted this video of me tidying up my daughter’s room, you all went crazy.
“I got a few views, but the comments were absolutely mental.
“I personally don’t see anything wrong with that.
“I’m basically doing her a favor, but I’m also doing myself a favor by tidying up this room.
because I can’t live in a messy house right now.
“Believe it or not, this probably wasn’t the worst state this room has ever been in.”
Gemma added that she doesn’t do this that often and that her daughter usually does it herself “after a bit of nagging.”
The mother added that for her this is “typically teenage” behavior.
She continued: “I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong. I just thought I was cleaning her room like I was her mother anyway.
“I would really love to know what everyone thinks about this.
“Do you clean and tidy your child’s room for them or do you think I’m wrong?”
Her video racked up more than 2,000 likes and many people were divided in the comments.

Permissive Parenting
Often referred to as ‘soft parenting’ or ‘yes moms/dads’.
Permissive parents are tolerant and only intervene when there is a serious problem.
They are very forgiving and adopt a “kids will be kids” attitude.
They often act more like friends than authority figures.
Authorized Parenthood
Authoritarian parents provide rules and limits to their children, but they also give them freedom to make decisions.
With an authoritarian parenting style, parents validate their children’s feelings while making it clear that adults are ultimately in charge.
They use positive reinforcement techniques, such as praise and reward systems, as opposed to harsh punishments.
Neglectful or uninvolved parenting
Essentially, neglectful parents ignore their children, who receive little guidance, affection and attention from their parents.
They don’t set rules or expectations and tend to have minimal knowledge about what their children are doing.
Uninvolved parents expect their children to raise themselves. They don’t devote much time or energy to meeting children’s basic needs.
Uninvolved parents can be negligent, but it is not always intentional. A parent with mental health or substance abuse issues, for example, may not be able to consistently care for a child’s physical or emotional needs.
One person defended her, saying, “I clean my kids’ rooms. There is no problem other than my own inability to live in a messy house.”
Another added: “I tidy my girls’ rooms every day.”
However, one wrote: “my son used to clean and tidy his own room when he was at home.”
A second said: “Did she say thank you? I think that’s what matters here. Appreciation.”
