FROM traditional nicknames to something a little more unique, baby names will always be a controversial topic.

The only thing that really matters is that you, the parent, like it.

However, a new mum has expressed her concerns after giving her week-old daughter a name she instantly regrets… after realizing it makes her look like a chain smoker.

On a Reddit thread shared online, the worried woman begged for “reassurance” over her daughter’s name, which she revealed was ‘Sigrid’.

She then explained how she and her husband “struggled” to choose a name, adding that they both had a favorite that the other didn’t like – hers was Ottilie and his Aubrey.

“Etta was our intended name, but he quickly dropped it after birth,” she continued.

“He mentioned Sigrid and I thought I liked it and agreed.

“Now I’m worried she’ll be bullied because she looks like a cigarette.”

The worried mother went on to say that her husband loves the nickname Ziggy or Siggy, before questioning whether ‘Sisi’ (pronounced Ceecee) could work.

She concluded: “Also, we are not Scandinavian, although we both look like it and the husband has had Danish heritage for a few generations.

“I like Beatrix and he might be willing to change that.”

The post has since been flooded with comments from social forum users, with very mixed reviews.

“’Siggy’ is short for ‘cigarette’ so don’t do that,” one wrote.

“I like Etta and Aubrey a lot more, but Sigrid is a good name. I agree that the English pronunciation sounds a bit like cigarettes”, agreed a second.

A third commented: “Honestly, it looks like a lot of cigarettes to me. What about Ingrid? Maybe Iggy as the nn?”

Meanwhile, a fourth noted: “I thought ‘that’s completely fine’ until you said it’s not Scandinavian. That’s a bit weird. Also, ‘Siggy’ is short for ‘cigarette’ so don’t do that.”

Elsewhere, others did their best to reassure the worried mother that she should stick to her name choice.

“I met a Sigrid and no one ever made that joke about her,” one person wrote.

“I loved it! Sigrid has been on my list for years and I never thought it would be close to cigarettes. Sisi, Ziggy or Siggi would be great nicknames!” observed another.

Another interjected: “I like Sigrid and cigarettes really wouldn’t occur to me as something to provoke. Sisi said Ceecee could totally function.”

And another added: “My grandmother is called Sigrid (German here). It’s a very solid name and means ‘beautiful victory’, which is a plus.”
