I stupidly didn’t think of my last name when I called my daughter Penny – even the nurses laugh when I say that

A FATHER is horrified to realize that the name he and his wife have given their daughter will certainly lead her to “a life of ridicule”.

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing the perfect nickname for your child – including thinking about possible nicknames the choice might yield.

Another important aspect that parents should keep in mind during this important decision is initials when combined with your last name or middle name.

Unfortunately for one little girl, her parents only realized they made a serious mistake after naming her – and there’s a cruel nickname that even the nurses are already making fun of.

The mortified father took to Reddit to share the story after naming his daughter who joined the family a month ago.

Although, along with his wife, the father thought they had given the mini-tot a rather timeless name – Penny – they now realize it was a mistake.

According to the parents, other adults have been using a horrible nickname for the poor child – Penny Pincher – all because her last name also starts with P.

He wrote: “Our daughter is about a month old now and my wife and I knew throughout her pregnancy that we would name her Penny.

Yes, Pincher is close to our last name… How did we not think of that?

”We love the name Penny. We think it suits her really well and we love the alliteration with our last name which also starts with P.

“However, after she was born, we started getting random family members and healthcare professionals calling her ‘Penny Pincher.’

”Yes, Pincher is close to our last name… How did we not think of that?

“It’s seriously gotten to the point where I can’t unlisten to it. I am devastated thinking that I led my daughter into a life of ridicule.

I named my baby after a wild dog – people openly torment me and the nurses at the hospital laughed, it really suits her

“Am I exaggerating? Is being called a ‘penny earner’ something school kids would say, or is it just old grandmothers?”

While the term — which is used to describe someone who is stingy with their money — is generally considered a negative trait, other Redditors assured the horrified father that this nickname wouldn’t stick with his schoolmates.

They explained that while most adults are familiar with this term, “penny pincher” is not something children would learn on their own.

One person said: “It doesn’t seem like something kids would come up with on their own or a phrase they would be likely to use.”

Another added: “I’ve heard the phrase penny pincher before, but I don’t think anyone other than a boomer or older can really use it.

Are unique baby names worth it?

The Fabulous deputy editor reveals the turmoil she faced with her own name growing up.

When I was a kid, all I wanted was one of those personalized keychains with my name on it.

But no joy, the closest I could find was Rosie, Joseph (not very good for a girl) and Joanne.

Josie is short for Josephine, which is a French name, and I managed to reach my 20s without ever meeting anyone who shared it.

When I try to introduce myself to people, I get all sorts of random things – like Tracey and Stacey – which can be really annoying.

Although I’ve come into contact with a few Josies over the past year – there seem to be a few of us around my age – it’s still a much rarer name than most of my friends.

Overall I don’t mind it, at least it’s not rude or poorly written.

And that means I can get away with ‘doing a Cheryl’ and just referring to myself as Josie.

I’m getting married this year and some friends are shocked that I’m changing my surname, as it’s not seen as very cool or feminist to do so these days, but I explain to them that I’m not as attached to Griffiths as I always said’ hi, it’s Josie’ when calling a friend.

I think it’s good to be unique and I will definitely try to replicate that when naming my own children.

It’s the rude names you have to watch out for, so after nine years as a lifestyle journalist, I’ll definitely avoid them.

”I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say that or even read it in text in a LONG time until now.”

A third wrote: “Thanks for the responses everyone. I’m starting to feel much better.

”We really love the name, so I just needed some unbiased opinions.”
